MARIA
JOSEFA GUAJARDO
|
|
|
|
|
Maria Josefa Guajardo was
the daughter of Alferez Jose Martinez Guajardo
and Margarita Gutierrez de Castro. She was
the wife of Francisco de la Garza Falcon
who was the Sergeant of Camargo, Tamaulipas
and previously in Cerralvo, Mexico under
Blas de la Garza Falcon. She and her husband
must have been important enough in South
Texas and Northern Mexico for Francis Seabury
to devote a chapter to her and her progeny.
Maria Josefa was born around 1720 (calculated
from her age in the Census records of early
Camargo) probably around Cerralvo. Early
records of Cerralvo are unavailable at this
time to find definite records. Calculation
of birth records of her children from Census
records also give us reason to believe that
she and Francisco were married around 1739
- 1740. Record of her father's will in the
Archivo Municipal de Monterrey, Indice de
Protocolos # 1679, recorded on the 6th of
November 1728, found in Book III, Folio
82, numero 38, list her and brothers and
sisters. The will tells us that they were
from the Estancia de Nuestra Senora del
Rosario which was contiguous with the city
of Monterrey. Maria Josefa's paternal grandparents
were Jose Guajardo and Nicolosa de la Garza
and her maternal grandparents were Diego
Gutierrez and Gertrudis Flores. Her father's
will also stated that he had a piece of
land in the community of (Hacienda of San
Nicolas) with three hours of water for irrigation.
The will stated that her brothers and sisters
were as follows:
Maria Gertrudis Guajardo
Ana Maria Guajardo
Isabel Juana Guajardo
Jose Guajardo
Nicolasa Guajardo
Antonia Margarita Guajardo
Maria Teresa Guajardo
Maria de Jesus Joaquin Guadardo.
Francisco de la Garza and Josefa Guajardo
were with the founding families of Camargo
and they are found in the Census of Camargo
on the 31 May of 1750 as a family receiving
aid from the government in establishing
their homes and later on the census date
of 3 of June 1750 as the Sergeant of Camargo
under Captain Blas Maria de la Garza Falcon.
Four children are listed each time during
the census. The following is the text extracted
from Francis Seabury's Work, Lawyer at Rio
Grande City, Texas, Speaker of the House
of Texas and Chronicler of founding families
of South Texas. This information was also
previously listed in Journal # 9, 1 and
2 of the Hispanic Genealogical Journal of
1991 and also edited in the Book, Family
Tree Book by Joel Rene Escobar in 1996.
