There was not a meeting scheduled this month. We all enjoyed a
Christmas Party at Juan and Betty Hernandez's wonderful home. The Society
looks forward to next year's Christmas Party at the new home being built for the
Hernandez family. The Society hopes that all those members and prospective
members had a Joyful Christmas Season and have a New Year that will bring your
research, those missing ancestors that have been hard to find. |

of the Library at the Clayton Library and will make an effort in his new
position to exhort and effort to have the library purchase more Hispanic
genealogy books.
|
5. |
New Business:
Ms. Cris Garza announced the upcoming Census 2000 and how important it will
be to have everyone counted. The members expressed some concerned from illegal
immigrants who fear INS would go after them. Ms. Garza indicated that city
commissioner, John Castillo, is very concerned and determined that every effort
be made to have an accurate count. She invited anyone wishing to be considered
for possible employment for the census contact her.
Mr. Baldemar Silva continued the discussion concerning a method by which we
could raise monies for the “essay scholarships” as first suggested by Ms. Garza.
It was moved by Ms. Garza and seconded by Mr. Serrano that the Hispanic
Genealogical Society pursues the bookbinding of our current journals for sale to
different libraries across the country. The motion was passed. Mr. Hernandez
offered his staff for any assistance in the effort. Mr. Baldemar Silva offered
to find a typist to retype some of the older journals that will need a makeover.
Hispanic Genealogical Society Conference 2000 will be held in Corpus Christi
during Labor Day next year at the Omni Bayfront Hotel.

| HGS Meeting Minutes October 20, 1999 |
1. |
President, Joe Guerra, welcomed everyone and thanked the group that attended
the conference in Laredo. |
2. |
The September 15, 1999 minutes were approved by Mr. Herrera and unanimously
accepted. |
3. |
Juan Hernandez gave the treasurer's report, the society's balance is
$0000.00 |
4. |
It was suggested by Juan Hernandez that the society invest its' money with
Chemical Trust and the interest would yield some extra dollars to be used for
scholarships. This thought is on the table. |
5. |
Regarding essays, only one was received, from Maryland. Would we be
interested in extending the deadline, selecting certain schools and speaking
with certain teachers to encourage the students? Schools suggested were
Austin, Milby, & Davis. We could extend the deadline to January 30,
2000. The motion was made accordingly and accepted unanimously. The
necessary schools & people will be informed and the information will
be updated on the website. |
6. |
The convention in Laredo was a great trip. $690.00 was collected from
memberships and book sales.
The 3-bus trip into Mexico was a great
success. 190 attended the convention. There was great table
participation. However, when the conference is held in Houston, it was
suggested we have a "large room" for book sales. A video of the conference
will be available for purchase soon. There was an incident at the
conference and as it turns out the books on Marriage Investigations were not
stolen. The money was inadvertently merged with other funds. Another
incident was a stolen poster at Bustamante. It is most unfortunate these
things happen when "los primos" get together. |
7. |
All efforts are being made to deliver the journal to members present at
meetings as well as mail- outs. Books are being delivered to Clayton
Library. |
8. |
There seemed to be a problem, timewise, in crossing at the border back
to the United States from Mexico during the conference. It was
suggested the society file a complaint with immigration regarding the
situation. There is a website, www.paisano.que, through which
complaints can be made. |
9. |
Web pages and links for members was suggested to Joe Guerra. This would
tremendously help the members and anyone interested. |
10. |
There is a 250 Birthday Conference in Goliad, Texas this weekend. |
11. |
The Conference next year, 2000, will be held in Corpus Christi.
The chosen hotel is the Omni on Shoreline Blvd. There possibly will be
side trips to Rivera, Mier and Guerrero, Mexico. The conference will be
held on the Labor Day Weekend. Joe Guerra entered "Houston", as the host
city, for the conference in the year 200l. |
