President Guerra opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. by welcoming newcomer,
Thomas Gurrola. All members introduced themselves to Mr. Gurrola and the family
names being researched. |

We have received a request from The University of
Texas, Ass’t. Chief Librarian, Mr. Adan Benavidez, asking us to donate missing
journals. A motion was made by Mr. Manuel Flores and seconded by Ms. Lydia
Zermeno to deny donating the journals to the University of Texas on the premise
that the University can afford to buy the journals. The motion passed. |

The treasurer’s report indicated a balance of $9, 460.19 . President Guerra
indicated that there are still checks coming in for membership and journals. |

There was some discussion on the upcoming Xmas Party to be held on
December 9, 2000 at Mr. Juan Hernandez new home at 3905 Curry Rd., Pearland,
Texas. Key map site: 613Y. |

Conference Reports:
a. Speakers: Currently
4 of 5 speakers has been confirmed. Need more speakers.
b. Location:
Contract has been signed with the Westin-Galleria Hotel
c. Bus Trip: Mr.
Trejo reported that he is continuing to set up several bus trips for the
conference attendees. One trip will be to the San Jacinto battleground. The
second trip will be to the Clayton Genealogy Library and possibly to the
Holocaust Museum. A third trip may be planned to the “Casa Ramirez”. Mr.
Ramirez would like to host and provide tours through his store, which is filled
with “Dia de los Muertos” altars etc.
d. Fund raising: We need volunteers to
solicit money and underwriters for the upcoming conference. |

Old Business:
a. Essay Contest: Mr. Garza reported that only one essay was received. Three
members of the committee will rate the essay. Discussion was held on what to
plan for next year. We need to work the targeted schools to ensure
participation.
b. Mr. Trejo reported that we still have caps, patches and
cups for sale.
c. Mr. Genaro Flores, reported that there are planning to set
up displays at both Milby High School and hopefully the University of Houston
for Mr. Thomas Lupe Lopez, former star basketball player. The display will
consist of clippings, photos etc. Mr. Genaro Flores also reported that the Texan
Association participated at the Seguin unveiling.
d. Mr. Manuel Flores
suggested that perhaps we would be able to secure some “costumes” from the
Renaissance Festival owner for the upcoming conference.
e. A motion to
accept the slate of officers proposed by the nominations committee was made by
Mr. Manuel Flores, seconded by Mr. Trejo and passed by the membership in
attendance. |

Speaker: Dr. Nestor Rodriguez, from the University of Houston
spoke on the results of a survey conducted in the Houston area regarding how
minorities get along with each other. Everyone enjoyed Dr. Rodriguez’s
presentation. There was a lot of discussion concerning the stats and how the
survey was conducted. |

Hispanic Genealogical Society
Any member that wants to inquire about our
funds please contact me, Jose Guerra, and I will gladly inform you whatever you
ask about our club. It is a non-profit organization and funds go toward
purchasing books for Clayton Genealogical Library in Houston and scholarships
for our essay contests for high school students. |

| HGS Meeting Minutes October18, 2000 |

President Guerra opened the meeting promptly at 7 pm. Mr. Guerra welcomed
everyone and asked that we go around the table to introduce ourselves to the new
members and visitors. |

Minutes: David Garza, secretary apologized to the membership for not
having the previous months minutes prepared and promised to submit them to
President Guerra. |
3. |
Treasurer, Juan Hernandez reported that the Society’s balance was
$0,000.00. |
4. |
President Guerra talked about the upcoming De La Garza Reunion near
Victoria, Texas on October 21, 2000. |
5. |
President Guerra advised the membership that the Texas State Library
Archives Commission was having meeting in Nacogdoches and Richmond, Texas. He
encouraged attendance, especially at the Richmond meeting. |
6. |
A motion was made by Juan Hernandez and seconded by Belinda G. Keylos to
donate Volumes 8-16 and Volume 7 #2 to the Clayton Library who had expressed a
need for their collection. |
7. |
President Guerra talked about Dot Com as a new listing for our
hispanicgs.com web site. The group requested that he continue to look into it. |
8. |
Essay Contest: David Garza, Essay Contest Chair, reported that the contest
would not close until Oct. 31, 2000 at which time he would submit a report. |
9. |
SEPTEMBER 2001 Update: Ms. Rosalba Aulenbacher sent in a report on the
hotel bids. A motion to contract with the Westin-Galleria was made by Mr.
Baldemar Silva and seconded by Mr. Juan Hernandez. The motion carried. The date
for the convention was set for Sept. 13-16, 2000. Various members volunteered to
help with the registration, hospitality and speakers committees. |

Old Business: Xmas Party date and location were discussed. Mr. Juan
Hernandez volunteered to host the party on Dec. 9 at his new residence. Everyone
agreed. |
11. |
New Business: Mr. Baldemar Silva agreed to chair the nominating committee
for the upcoming positions that will become vacant this coming year. The
following positions will be voted on: 1st & 2nd, Vice President, Treasurer,
Librarian, Historian and Membership Director. |

September 20, 2000 |

President Guerra opened the meeting at 6:30 p.m. by welcoming everyone to
the meeting. |
2. |
The Treasurers report: $0,000.00 due to the expenses incurred at the
Corpus Christi Convention. |
3. |
The minutes were submitted and a motion was made by Mr. AdolfoTrejo and
seconded by Mr. Joe Muguerza. The motion passed. |
4. |
Old Business: Mr. Garza, reported on the scholarship essay contest.
He reported that the HISD Board had approved the contest for dissemination to
several HISD schools. The deadline for essays was set at Oct. 31, 2000. |
5. |
There was a lot of discussion on the Corpus Christi Convention. |
6. |
It was agreed to begin planning the 2001 convention. Discussion was held
on location, dates, table, speakers, convention registration fee and etc. |
7. |
The meeting was adjourned until October 18, 2000. |

August 16, 2000 |

President Guerra opened the meeting at 7 p.m. by welcoming everyone. |
2. |
The minutes were distributed to everyone present. A motion was made by Mr.
Trejo to approve the minutes, Ms. Zermeno seconded the motion and it was passed
by the members present. |
3. |
The was no Treasuers report due to Mr. Juan Hernandez absence. |
4. |
President Guerra asked for volunteers to help staff the tables at the
upcoming Convention in Corpus Christi in September. Several members
volunteered to help. |
5. |
Mr. Trejo made a presentation concerning ordering the cups, badges and caps
to be sold at the Corpus Christi convention. Discussion was held and everyone
agreed to Mr. Trejo’s proposal. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra again requested articles to be published in the upcoming journal.
He said he needed about 25 pages worth of material and requested help in putting
the journal together in time for the Corpus Christi convention. |
7. |
Mr. Genaro Flores spoke about the new Mormon Temple tours being conducted to
the public. The Temple is located on Champions Forest and Cypresswood Dr. and
will run through August 22. |
8. |
SHOW & TELL:
Mr. Al Flores brought and displayed a shoe horn made from a piece of railroad
track. It used to belong to his father who worked on the railroad. Mr. Joe Muguerza passed around a beautiful Family Tree book from a family in
Monterrey, Mexico. Mr. Genaro Flores showed copies of the new Cesar Chavez High School floor
plans. He also met with Professor Tacho Manidola from UH and others on a
position to be filled which required a Library of Science degree. I apologize I
was not able to get the specifics.

NEW BUSINESS:
Mr. Guerra informed the group present about the Balli Family’s landmark
victory in a Brownsville court concerning the land rights taken away from them. Mr. Guerra also indicated that there would be an article in the Houston
Chronicle concerning a profile on three families to be highlighted in the
Outlook Section. Mrs. Garza, (Cris) reported on the Scholarship Committee. Plans were
submitted to the HISD School Board to approve the scholarship contest to be held
in some targeted predominately Hispanic high schools. Mr. Garza, (David) reported on how additional funds can be made by holding a
Fiesta Club Party. |

GUEST SPEAKER:
Our guest speaker, Ms. Blanche Flores delighted the group by sharing parts of
a book she is writing about her childhood and her father Lazaro Quiroz, a.k.a.
Frank Paz. Everyone was involved in her activity and learned from it. |
11. |
The meeting was adjourned at 9:50 p.m. with a reminder from Mr. Guerra
encouraging everyone to attend the Corpus Christi Genealogy Convention. |

| HGS Meeting Minutes
June 21, 2000 |
1. |
President, Joe Guerra, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. by welcoming
everyone and guests. We welcomed Mr. Alonzo Salazar by going around the table
and having everyone introduce themselves and the families they are researching. |

David Garza, Secretary, passed out the May minutes and asked for any
corrections. Mr. Genaro Flores pointed out that Mrs. Gloria Rendon was a guest
and not a member, as of yet. Minutes stand corrected. |
3. |
Juan Hernandez, Treasurer, reported a balance of $00,000.00 Mr. Hernandez
paid some outstanding accounts during the meeting, which will be reflected in
next months report. |
4. |
Old Business:
Mr. Adolfo Trejo reported that the HGS logo could be made into a cloth patch
for about $3.75 each with an order of 100 patches. Further discussion was held
on having mugs made with logo also. These items would be used to sell at the
upcoming Corpus Christi conference in September. President Guerra, reminded everyone of the upcoming conference in Corpus
Christi. He also passed out the registration forms. Everyone was encouraged to
attend. President Guerra made a request for more articles for the next journal due
out in August. If you have any article materials please contact Mr. Guerra as
soon as possible. He will also need assistance in reformatting the student
essays for publication. A suggestion was made by President Guerra for the HGS to purchase the Seabury
Papers, ($95) and the Escobar Family book ($75) for donation to the Houston
Genealogy Library. Mr. Juan Hernandez made the motion, which was seconded by Mr.
David Garza and passed by the attendees. |
5. |
New Business:
Mr. Genaro Flores addressed the group on “Chicano Go Home” by Tomas “Lupe”
Lopez. The book is about Mr. Alfonso Rodriguez, a famous Milby High School and
University of Houston alumnus who was also a popular and famous basketball
player. Mr. Flores stated that Texas Senator, Mario Gallegos, is interested in
having some of Mr. Lopez’s mementos displayed at Milby High School and/or at the
University of Houston. President Guerra asked Mr. Flores to continue to be
involved in the project and keep the HGS informed. Mr. Flores suggested that Mr.
Adolfo Trejo be assigned to the project since he was more familiar with Mr.
Alfonso Rodriguez. Mr. Trejo agreed to look into it. Mr. Baldemar Silva informed the group that the card catalog is now available
through the Internet for $5. Using a 7digit code one can order a specific film,
which will be sent to the nearest LDS location. He also reported that he was
working in the Rio Grande Valley and found that several of the counties are
micro filming their records and discarding the original documents. He asked that
they be given to him. He will store them until we can develop a Hispanic Museum.

Show and Tell:
Our guest speaker was not able to attend so Mr. Rey Herrera, delighted the
group with a travelers report on his most recent visit to Egypt, which was
followed by Mr. Juan Hernandez’s report on his most recent trip to Greece.
Everyone enjoyed their travel stories and accounts about how different other
cultures can be. |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. |

Secretary David Garza apologized for not having the April minutes prepared
for the meeting due to circumstances beyond his control. |

Treasurer’s report indicated a balance of $00,000.00. $257 came in
recent membership and book sales. It was noted that we have members as far away
as Homer, Alaska. |
4. |
President Guerra noted that the winning scholarship essays would be published
in the next journal. |
5. |
Mr. Trejo passed around samples of the HGS trademark and gave his report. |
6. |
New Member: Ms. Gloria Rendon who indicated she was researching several
lines. I did not hear them clearly but I believe it was, Benavidez, Longoria and
de la Garza. |
7. |
A reminder was made by President Guerra concerning the upcoming convention in
Corpus Christi in Sept. 8-9-10, 2000. |

This year’s scholarship presentations were made to:
1st. Place, Ms. Eva Rodriguez, $500,
daughter of Maria and Jose Rodriguez
2nd Place, Ms. Dalythza Gonzales, $300,
daughter of Maria Ofelia and Jose Luis Gonzales
3rd Place, Ms. Cynthia
Martinez, $200, daughter of Ms. Vivian Martinez |

After the presentations more discussion was held on the WWII project.
Everyone was encouraged to submit articles concerning former Hispanic veterans
from WWII. |

Mr. Genaro Flores addressed the group about 501 C 3 organizations trying to
start art projects with funding from the Texas Arts Commission. They are looking
for sponsors to promote “songs of our fathers”. President Guerra asked Mr.
Flores to call him. |
11. |
Mr. Al Flores introduced our evening speaker Mr. Luis Crespo, from the Crespo
Funeral Home. Mr. Crespo gave a historical account on the Crespo family and
family funeral business. |

April 19, 2000 |

This is a reconstruction of the meeting minutes of April 19, 2000. I was late
for the meeting and Ms. Lydia Zermeno took notes for me, which I have since
misplaced. |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The minutes were
read and approved by the members present. Mr. Hernandez was absent also but he
had sent in his report indicating a balance of $0,000.00. |
3. |
There was discussion and reminders concerning the upcoming Corpus Christi
Genealogical Conference to be held on September 8-10, 2000. Early registration
is encouraged. |
4. |
Cris Garza reported on the successful parade in honor of Cesar Chavez. HGS
has partnered with Fiesta and Gallegos Elementary School. The float looked nice
decorated with children in various costumes reflecting different periods in our
Hispanic history. |
5. |
The guest speaker had cancelled due to personal problems. This led to some
discussion dealing with El Mesteno, Jose De La Luz Saenz. There was also
discussion by Fred Garcia suggesting that each member be responsible for
scheduling a guest speaker each month. There was further discussion dealing with
Arte Publico Press. |
6. |
We moved into “Show and Tell” where various members talked about family
photos and family tree research being conducted. |
7. |

President Joe Guerra opened the meeting at 7:15 p.m. with introductions
around the table. Mr. Israel and Mrs. Nora Morales were introduced as guests. |

Mr. David Garza, secretary, passed out the February 16 minutes for review
and/or corrections. Motion made by Mr. Juan Hernandez and seconded by Mrs.Hilda
Flores. Motion passed. |

Mr. Juan Hernandez, treasurer, reported a balance of $0,000.00. Mr.
Trejo asked about the mailed out membership statements. Mr. Hernandez replied
that the return had been very good, consequently the increase in our budget. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra had a short discussion on “Friends of the Library” and the type of
funding and support they receive. This discussion led into Old Business. |
5. |
Old Business:
Fundraising- Mr. Trejo demonstrated various designs for fund raising efforts.
Motion was made by David Garza to establish a committee to decide. Mr. Trejo,
Mr. Hernandez and Mr. Morales volunteered to form the committee.

Scholarship Essay Contest Report- David Garza reported that the winners have
been selected as follows:
First Place: $500 Ms. Eva Rodriguez

Third Place: $200 Ms. Cynthia Martinez
The winners will be notified and invited to an awards dinner along with their
parents for the May meeting. |

Mr. Joe Murgueza reported on the book binding process. There was a lot of
discussion and further inquiries will be made before a decision is made. |

Mr. Joe Guerra asked how we were coming out on retyping the journals and Mr.
B. Silva reported that the project was half way through. |

A reminder was made that the 2000 Hispanic Genealogical Conference will be
held in Corpus Christi this year and everyone is encouraged to attend. |

Mr. Genaro Flores reported that the Cesar Chavez Parade is on schedule. HGS
will participate with the Fiesta float. Ms. Cris Garza and Ms. Lydia Zermeno
reported that they would be setting up a booth and pass out HGS information. A
motion was made and seconded to approve $500 for expenses. |

New Business:
New members have joined as a result of the web page and statement mail-out.
President Guerra offered to help anyone establish a web page and encouraged
everyone to build one for his or her family.
Mr. Genaro Flores reported that they are still looking for Census workers. |

Mr. Israel Morales led the “show and tell” discussion. Further discussion
continued on the University of Texas, Rivas-Rodriguez project that is looking
for Hispanics in WWII. |

Donation to Clayton Library of Genealogical Research in
Houston
On March 10, 2000 the Society donated books to the Clayton Library to further
Hispanic Research at that fine facility. Our group has hopes those
searching for their Hispanic ancestors will use the collection at the Clayton
Library, located at 5300 Caroline Street in Houston. Efforts are being
made to also work with the Clayton Library Friends to help us in adding to the
resources for Hispanic research. The list of books is as follows:

| HGS Meeting Minutes
January 19, 2000 |
1. |
President Guerra opened the meeting promptly at 7 p.m. There were no
guests so introductions were dispensed with and the meeting moved into reading
of the last month’s minutes. |

Secretary, David Garza, read the minutes after which a motion was made to
approve them by Mr. Reynaldo Herrera and seconded by Juan Hernandez. The minutes
were approved by the membership in attendance. |
3. |
Mr. Juan Hernandez, treasurer, gave the treasurer’s report. He stated our
balance at $0,0000. There was some discussion for investing some of the money to
earn more interest. President Guerra reported that he had sent out about 330
renewal membership notices with return stamped envelopes. |

A discussion was held regarding fundraisers. To include the following:

Old Business:
Scholarship Essay Contest: Cris Garza will check for the total number
of entries and report to President Guerra. Bookbinding: Discussion on different companies who do book binding to
be contacted. President Guerra appointed Jose Muguerza to look into the best
book binding deal. A reminder that this year’s 2000 Conference will be held in Corpus
Christi, Texas at the OMNI Bayfront Hotel. Everyone should begin to make plans
to attend. Mr. Silva reminded everyone that there is need to retype some of the
old journals prior to having reprints made. |

New Business:
There was discussion on increasing our membership. The discussion
centered on creative new ways to bring in new members such as reduced rates for
students etc.
President Joe Guerra talked about a WebPages Workshop.
Cris Garza reported about Census 2000 and showed the package she
brought in for Mr. Baldemar Silva. Mr. Silva talked about the details for those
who wish to work during the upcoming 2000 census.
Mr. Al and Genaro Flores announced that they would be staffing our
exhibit table at the upcoming Annual Hispanic Forum on February 4, 2000.
Mr. Genaro Flores reported on research being conducted for WWII
Hispanic veterans by the University of Texas.
President Guerra reported sadly that he had received word from Mrs.
Mary Lou Vela that she had breast cancer. He said that when he spoke to her she
was in good spirits.
Manuel Flores proposed that the Society take over the oral histories,
which had been taken for “The Pueblo” book. |
