| HGS Meeting Minutes
September 19, 2001 |
1. |
President Joe Guerra started the meeting at 7:00 p.m. with a warm welcome
for everyone. Introductions were conducted around the table in order to meet the
guests. |
2. |
No official treasurers report was made since not all the bills have been
settled. |
3. |
The secretary was absent at the August meeting so there were no meeting
minutes. |
4. |
The majority of the meeting was spent discussing the outcome of the
successful conference in spite of the events of September 11, 2001. President
Guerra had called a few of the officers and decided to go forward with the
conference. There were four no-show speakers as a result of the cancelled
flights. Comments ranged from the conference badges, bus tour, speakers and
first class luncheon. Everyone agreed that the conference was a success in spite
of the circumstances. |

Our guest speaker Mr. Fernando Munoz Altea asked for a minute of silence
in memory of the NYC Twin Towers and pentagon tragedy. He went on to give a
preview presentation of his upcoming genealogy book, which will be published
soon. |

The meeting was adjourned around 8:30 p.m. Next meeting is scheduled for
October 17, 2001 at Loma Linda Restaurant on Telephone Rd. |

July 18, 2001 |

President Guerra called the
meeting to order and welcomed everyone. |
2. |
Secretary Garza apologized for
not having the previous months minutes prepared and will provide them at the
August meeting. |
3. |
Treasurer’s report: President Guerra reported a balance
of $11,171.17. |
4. |
We were all sad to hear of Ms. Mary Lou Vela’s passing
of cancer. Mr. Alfred Flores made a motion to donate $100 to the
“Cruelty to Animals Protection” in
Mrs. Vela’s memory. The motion was seconded by Mr. Genaro Flores and passed. |
5. |
Old Business: Mr. Genaro Flores stated the following
a. The Juan Seguin Blvd. Will extends from Hwy. 225 to
the monument.
b. Requested that we again provide our
exhibition photo’s etc. for a new exhibit event.
c.
Cayetano Barrera’s list to be provided. |

Conference Report
a. Need volunteers to introduce speakers.
b. Volunteer to introduce luncheon speaker.
c. Bags, Ms. Lydia Zermeno will continue to look for a
sponsor.
d. Mr. Adolfo Trejo reported on the bus tour,
which is ready to go. A motion was made by Mr. Manuel Flores
to provide Mr. Howard a
free bus tour. Mrs. Angie Flores seconded it. The motion passed.
e. There was some discussion for a fundraiser for the
conference bags
f. There was discussion on having a
musical group on Friday or at the luncheon on Saturday. |
7. |
New Business:
a. Scholarship Report: Mrs. Cris Garza reported that
Hispanic Heritage Month will be Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. She indicated that in order
to have more student participation we would need more membership involvement and
participation in the targeted schools.
b. New Journal:
President Guerra reported that the new journal is almost complete.
c. Mr. Genaro Flores reminded everyone that we will need
volunteers for the hospitally room. We will need coolers
and donations of soft drinks. |

June 20, 2001 |
1. |
President Joe Guerra opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. by welcoming
everyone. Introductions were made all around the table for the benefit of new
visitors. |
2. |
Secretary David Garza provided copies of the previous minutes
to the membership. A motion was made by Mrs. Rosalba Aulenbacher and seconded by
Ms. Lydia Zermeno. The motion passed. |
3. |
President Guerra reported that our
Treasurer, Mr. John Hernandez had submitted his resignation. President Guerra
reported a balance of $11, 978.91. |
4. |
Old Business:
a. Conference bag samples were show. $596 will buy 200 bags. Mrs. Cris Garza
volunteered to check with Houston Library for bag
donations.
b. Main Library Exhibition: It was reported
that the items loaned by some HGS membership was very well done and look very
nice.
c. Lupe Lopez Dinner: M/M Trejo reported that the
dinner was very successful and everyone was overwhelmed with the turn out.
d. Mr. Genaro Flores reported that the Milby High School
75th Anniversary was also a great success with about 3,000 people in attendance.
e. Juan Seguin Blvd: Mr. Genaro Flores reported that many
people attended the function in Austin, Texas. All voted for approval except for
Deer Park. He also reported that Dr. Tijerina is pushing for a Tejano Monument.
f. Conference Reports:

Journal articles are still being requested in order to complete the next
journal. Please submit your articles to President Guerra ASAP. |

Mr. Genaro
Flores reported that Ms. Kristina Rios Lumbreras mother had passed away. He also
reported that Mr. Lumbereras is planning a film festival and she is going to
compile a report on the exhibit. Mr. Flores also reported that he spoke to Mr.
Leonel Castillo at city hall on research on the Moreno family.
In closing
there was discussion on several activities. Mr. John Hernandez stated that Mr.
Armando Rodriguez was looking for the Moya family who is getting royalty checks
Mr. Genaro Flores passed copies of an article of a museum in Alice,
Texas. The article is by Mr. John Flores who is a biographer in San Antonio,
Texas. There was also a Texas Observer article on Maria Eugenia Guerra, she
writes a newspaper and magazine on the border. |

Minutes were distributed and a motion was made by Ms. Lydia Zermeno and seconded
by Mr. Manuel Flores. Motion passed. |

| HGS Meeting Minutes
January 17, 2001 |
1. |
President Joe Guerra opened the meeting at 6:45 p.m. by welcoming
everyone. Mr. Jesse Hernandez was welcomed as a guest and all the members
present introduced themselves and the lines they were researching. |
2. |
David Garza, secretary passed out the minutes from the last official
meeting on November 15, 2000. After a few minutes, Mr. Serrano moved to
pass the minutes and Ms. Belinda P. Kaylani seconded the motion. The motion
passed. |
3. |
Treasurer, Juan Hernandez, was absent so the his report was given by
President Guerra. The balance was reported. |
4. |
Old Business:
a. Xmas Party; everyone who attended the Christmas Party had a good time and
we are grateful to Mr. & Mrs. Juan Hernandez for being such gracious hosts.
b. Mr. Adolfo Trejo reported that the “Lupe Lopez” project was doing well
and picking up interest in the community, especially at the U of H.
c.
Scholarships: President Guerra will take care of mailing out the scholarships to
each of the winners. Further discussion was held on the future of the
scholarship program due to a lack of interest and participation. |

Convention news: We have been able to obtain three new speakers; Mr. Leal
Garmendia (?), Mr. Israel Cavazos and Mr. Michael Salinas. We have also received offers from both Continentals Airlines and Southwest
Airlines for convention discounts for the upcoming Houston conference in
September. Mr. Adolfo Trejo also reported that the convention bus trip is coming along
and he will be meeting with San Jacinto officials for final details and plans. |

President Guerra reported that we have received $1,101.00 in new
membership dues. Everyone is reminded to submit their 2001 dues if they not
already done so. |
7. |
Latter Day Saints Molecular Genealogy Research Project
on January 27 at the Baytown Texas Family History, 1010 Birdsong, Baytown,
Texas. |
8. |
President Guerra advised the group that we had received and offer
from Rada Cutlery to sell their cutlery products as a fundraiser. |
9. |
Mr.
Guerra also showed the members present an ad that he purchased for the “El
Mesteno” Magzine. The magazine has a circulation around 1,400 and we may attract
more attendees to the upcoming convention. |
10. |
Mr. Guerra also made reference to the current members who have been
submitting additional monies as donations to our budget. |
11. |
The Garcia book written by Father Gustavo Barrera (Brownsville) is now
available for $35.00 to those who are interested. |
12. |
We received notice that the Rio Grande Valley chapter is already
preparing for the 2002 Conference in the Valley. They have already begun to plan
bus trips to Camargo, Mier and Old Revilla. |
13. |
Mr. Joe Murgueza advised everyone about the upcoming Annual Victoria
College, John W. Stormont Lectures on South Texas Conference, as a joint effort
with the South Texas Historical Association. The lectures will be held on Feb.
2-3, 2001. |
