| HGS Meeting Minutes
November 20, 2002 |
1. |
President Joe Guerra opened the meeting to order at 7 PM. Introduced
himself and welcomed everyone. Mr. Guerra brought stamps and all the
letters with which to stuff the envelopes for the 2003 dues. |
2. |
The minutes were distributed to everyone from the October meeting.
Mr. T. Serrano made a motion to pass the minutes and everyone accepted the
motion. |
3. |
Mr. Guerra gave an oral treasurer’s report. He gave us a total of
$12,851.04. He also talked about having all the letters ready to mail and
also discussed what expenses are involved in preparing the journal, such as
getting the journal published and various other expenses. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra announced the the 2003 officers – 1st VP,- Lydia Zermino,
2nd VP – Alfred Flores, Treasurer(one year still left on this term), and
Historian – Adolf Trejo. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra read the thank you card from Cris Garza. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra invited everyone again to the Christmas Party which will be
held at Juan Hernandez’s home on December 14, 2002. He issued a map and
gave directions. He also said that those who wanted could bring a dish. |
7. |
Old Business:
It was announced that the cookbooks had been marked
down. |
8. |
New Business:
L. Zermino talked about the tickets she had for sale for
a benefit barbeque and the Jeff Davis Hispanic dance being held at the Shriners
Hall on November 30th . |
9. |
Our speaker for this month was Ms. Isabelle Ganz, teaches at U of H.
She spoke about the different music combinations of Hebrew, Arabic and Turkish,
which surprisingly, had various words that were in Spanish. It was an
extremely interesting presentation and also very entertaining. |

| HGS Meeting Minutes October16, 2002 |
1. |
President Joe Guerra opened the meeting to order at 7 PM. Introduced
himself and welcomed everyone. Mr. Guerra told us about Cris Garza’s
surgery which had taken place the day prior to the day of the meeting. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the September meeting.
Ms. L. Zermeno made a motion to pass the minutes and Ms. L. Gonzales second the
motion. |
3. |
Mr. Guerra gave an oral treasurer’s report. He gave us a total of
$13,083.14 which included 117.00 added the day of the meeting.
Additionally, $910.00 from cookbooks and journals which were sold at our booth
at the conference. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra spoke about the need for elections for 2003 officers –
Nominating committee 1st VP, 2nd VP, Treasurer(one year still
left on this term), and Historian (Mr. Genaro Flores stated he would not be able
to continue as Historian due to his health). |
5. |
Mr. Guerra mentioned Ms. Debbie Gomez having a great conference in
McAllen. We all were given the opportunity to give our comments about our
experience at the conference. The next conferences in 2003 – San Antonio,
2004 – Victoria, and 2005 – Austin. He also said that they were working on
1st Book of Baptisms from Camargo, and 2nd Book of Reynosa Marriages. |

Mr. Guerra said he would be sending flowers and a card, which we all
signed at the meeting, to Cris Garza on behalf of everyone at HGS wishing her a
speedy recovery. |
7. |
Mr. Guerra mentioned the new dues notice for 2003 needed to be sent out,
Gerardo Nevarez volunteered. |
8. |
Mr. Guerra said he had received many compliments on the Journal for 2002
and that we had purchased 4 books for Clayton Library. |
9. |
Cris sent the money for participation for Career Day at the 2003 Hispanic
Forum Students meeting the 3rd week in January. |
10. |
Old Business:
Discussed the inventory on hats, cups, and patches. |
11. |
New Business:
We were urged to vote at upcoming election. |
12. |
We did not have a speaker for this month. |

| HGS Meeting Minutes
September 18, 2002 |
1. |
President Joe Guerra opened the meeting to order at 7 PM. Introduced
himself and welcomed everyone. Mr. Guerra talked about the amount of buses
necessary for the tour. There would be four and possibly five. He also
said he send out 100 journals to paid members. A discussion was held on
the availability of telephone numbers and/or email addresses in the journals. |

The minutes were not available from last month’s meeting. |
3. |
Ms. Garza gave an oral treasurer’s report. Cris explained some
expenses made which were necessary and expressed the need for a written monthly
report from an auditor before a report can be issued. Our ending balance
is $12,650. |
4. |
The convention: Mr. Guerra spoke about needing volunteers to give
away cups and hats at the convention table. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra mentioned the Journals were mailed out. |
6. |
Mr. Silva talked about the interesting work he did and all he had learned
as a volunteer in the Texas Room at the Houston Public Library. |
7. |

8. |
New Business:
Mr. Serrano spoke about the trip to Salt Lake City,
Utah. He also passed around literature from that trip. |

Mr. Flores introduced the speaker Linda Flores, attorney, who spoke about
her work for the migratant farm workers. How bad they are treated and how
underpaid for the extremely hard manual labor. Also how they are forced to
live in such subhuman conditions. |

August 21, 2002 |

President Joe Guerra opened the meeting to order at 6:55 PM.
Introduced himself and welcomed everyone. Mr. Guerra talked about how just
talking with other members you might find a name in common somewhere in your
lineage. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the July meeting. Mr.
A. Flores made a motioned to pass the minutes and Mr. G. Flores second the
motion. |
3. |
Mr. Garza passed out the treasurer’s report. Our ending balance is
$13,328.18, there was a difference from last month. |
4. |
The convention: McAllen, Texas, Sep. 27,28, 29, 2002, Casa de Palmas
Hotel, was discussed. Talked about a waiting list to get on the four and
possibly five buses for the tour. Mr. Guerra spoke about Mr. Che Guerra,
owner of the Nuevo Santander Gallery, and his extensive collection, which would
be available Saturday evening. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned the Journals were ready for printing and should be
out in two weeks. He also said the articles were outstanding and was very
proud. |

New Business:
Mr. Guerra talked about the Sanborn Viva Tour which he
and his family took to San Miguel de Allende. He highly recommended this tour. |

Mr. Flores introduced the speaker Neo Franco Cantu, who spoke about his
recently finished book called Destiny Fortold and also read it to the group. |

July 17, 2002 |
1. |
President Joe Guerra opened the meeting to order at 6:55 PM.
Introducing himself and welcomed everyone. Mr. Guerra mentioned the fact
that often times, if you talk to other members after the meeting, you may just
find a missing link/connection in your family tree. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the June meeting. Mr.
Trejo made a motioned to pass the minutes and Ms. Zermeno second the motion. |
3. |
Mr. Garza passed out the treasurer’s report. Our ending balance is
$14,950.69, which was the same as last month. |
4. |
The convention (McAllen, Texas, Sep. 27,28, 29, 2002, Casa de Palmas
Hotel) was discussed. Networking at the convention was suggested whenever
possible. There will be a lot of people from different areas. We
will have a booth at the convention. Mr. Trejo will have various items on
display. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra asked if anyone had any articles for the Journal. He also
suggested that the articles be referenced in case the reader should want to
research further on the source of this information. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra talked about the benefits from volunteering at the Clayton
Library such as learning new tips on research and also the need for Hispanic
personnel to volunteer, possibly 3 nights a week, to translate at the Clayton
Library. |
7. |
Old Business:
Mr. G. Flores had an article and books which he passed
around for everyone to see. |
8. |
New Business:
Mr. Garza talked about the restoration of the mural
”Labor Movement”, which is on Canal Street. He also made a motion that we
should get involved, however, his motion brought about more discussion on who
actually ”we” included. Mr. Garza also made a motion to reimburse Mr.
Flores for the dinners he provided all the guest speakers he has been able to
bring to our meetings. This motion was put to a vote and unanimously
accepted. Additionally, Mr. Garza made a motion to get involved in the
activities at the Museum during September/October Hispanic Month. Mr.
Garza was able to get one of his three motions passed. |
9. |
Mr. Flores introduced the speaker Professor, Guadalupe San Miguel, who
spoke on the different definitions and/or names of the Mexican music and how it
has evolved to what we know as Tejano music. Professor San Miguel also
brought his current book to sell to the interested members. |

June 19, 2002 |

President Joe Guerra opened the meeting to order at 7:04 PM.
Introducing himself and welcomed everyone. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the May meeting. Mr.
Garza moved to pass the minutes and Ms. Lydia Zermeno second the motion. |
3. |
Mrs. Cris Garza passed out the treasurer’s report. As of June 19th
our ending balance is $14,950.69. |
4. |
The convention (McAllen, Texas, Sep. 27,28, 29, 2002, Casa de Palmas
Hotel) was discussed. The bus tour on Friday and Border Buttermilk
Reception was also discussed. |
5. |
The articles for the Journal are due by July 17th for completion before
the convention. |
6. |
A discussion was held of the possibility of a tour of the Museum.
The hours during the week, the dates , and which days would be open late were
also mentioned. |
7. |
Old Business:
Cris Garza mentioned the new HISD East District
Technical Skills, which is located at 1102 Telephone. |
8. |
New Business:
Mr. G. Flores mentioned the Texas Library closing and
they would have to move their books somewhere else. Mr. Flores also passed
around some pictures and a commemorative magazine. A picture of Adoph
Trejo’s great grandparents was also displayed. Clayton Library closing
down at night. Will open 3nights a week only. They are under a new
budget, which cut down their personnel from 24 people to 16. |

May 15, 2002 |

Mr. Flores, Acting President opened the meeting to order at 7:20 PM. Introducing himself and welcomed everyone. |
2. |
The minutes were distributed to everyone from the April meeting. Mr. G. Flores moved to pass the minutes and Mr. M. Flores second the motion. |
3. |
Mr. A. Flores passed out the treasurer’s report for Mrs. Cris Garza who was out of town and not able to attend. As of May 15th our ending balance is $14,976.41. |
4. |
Mr. Fred Garcia talked about the Eisenhower Multicultural, which sponsored by Edinburg Foundation. The only ones invited were the consulates of different countries. The speaker was a Japanese astronaut. The function was not a success. |
5. |
Mr. Herrera showed a magazine purchased in Monterrey Mexico which showed picture of the atrocities, which took place in Mexico similar to the ones happening in Bosnia. |
6. |
Old Business:
Mr. G. Flores talked about the exhibit at the museum, which will be on display until August 4th. Mr. F. Garcia said he had some art contacts. A discussion on whether we should do something about arranging a tour of the museum or wait on Cris to return. Mr. G. Flores made a motion to wait till Cris returned as well as Mr. Guerra, as far as finding out the details. A vote was taken and we reached a consensus to wait. Mr. G. Flores inquired about the price of the booths at the up coming LULAC Convention. |

New Business:
Mr. G. Flores mentioned the Tejanos meeting, which will take place on May 24th at the Carlos Garcia Community Center. |

April 17, 2002 |

President Guerra opened the meeting to order at 7 PM. Introducing himself and welcomed everyone. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the March and February meetings. Mr. David Garza moved to pass the minutes and Ms. Lydia Zermino second the motion. |
3. |
Mrs. Cris Garza passed out the treasurer’s report. A discussion was held on the size of the list and whether the list should be purged. David Garza suggested sending reminders to previous members. Sofia Allison suggested formers members who had not paid be purged also. |
4. |
The meeting, which was supposed to take place at the Museum of Fine Arts, could not be arranged. It was postponed until hopefully June or July. |
5. |
A motion for the books needed for the Clayton Library to complete the collection at $50.00 each was passed. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra mentioned The Clayton Library would meet and consider closing the Iverson Building since attendance has been low. And suggested we set aside $5,000.00 to purchase the microfilm for Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon and Coahuila, Mexico which could draw more of the Hispanic into the library. |
7. |
Mr. Guerra then read us the list of items, which let us know if we were Latin, or not. |
8. |
Old Business:
• Mr. Trejo showed us all the new decals. Mr. Serrano suggested we sell them for 50 cents. |
9. |
New Business:
• Mr. Flores mentioned the LULAC Conference would be held in June the 24th through the 29th.
• Mr. Silva suggested a committee to handle different functions.
• Mr. Guerra exhibited the book El Mesteno. |
10. |
Mr. Genaro Flores sister, Ms Ruby Sorias, was introduced to the members and then the members proceeded to introduce themselves and the names they were researching. |
11. |
Mr. Guerra announced that all articles need to be submitted by July the 15th in order to make publication. |
12. |
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 until May 15, 2002. |

March 20, 2002 |
1. |
Everyone gathered in a room at the museum. President Guerra
mentioned that no formal meeting had been planned so he informaly opened the
meeting at approximately 7:50 PM. Introducing himself and then proceeding
on to the rest of the members in a round-table fashion for the benefit of guest
attending. We had Ms. Saenz from the Tejano Association in attendance. |

No minutes were distributed to everyone from the last official meeting on
February 20, 2002 |

Mrs. Chris Garza gave the treasurer’s report of a total of
$00,000.98. She also mentioned Family Day which would take place on May
12, 2002. She informed us that Ms. Myer had the flu and would not be able
to attend. A tour of the Texas Flags was about to begin and we were
invited to join them |
4. |
After the tour we reconvened in our designated meeting room, Mr.
Guerra announced that some Cuban Papers/Films from 1780-1820 would be available
for viewing to the public at the Clayton Library |
5. |
Mr. Guerra informed us that certain genealogy books had disappeared from
the Houston Public Library and if we wanted to replace them, they cost us $30 to
replace them. Mr. Garza made a motion to replace them, motion was passed
unanimously |
6. |
A discussion about having our meeting at the Museum in April and
again on May 15th . Everyone voted to have the April meeting on Telephone
Rd and the May meeting at the museum |
7. |
Mr Trejo talked about having some caps and mugs available and would have
them at our next meeting. Mr. Flores gave a brief documentary on the flag
on display from Toluca |

President Guerra opened the meeting to order at approximately 6:50 PM. Introducing himself and then proceeding on to the rest of the members in a round-table fashion for the benefit of guest attending. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the last official meeting on January 16, 2002. Mr. Garza moved to pass the minutes and Mr. Silva second the motion. |

Mrs. Chris Garza passed out the treasurer’s report. She also passed around a binder with different articles of interest along with extra copies for anyone who wanted a copy. Mrs. Garza mentioned there was one entry for the Student Essay, which was for $250.00. |
4. |
Mr. Manny Flores gave a report on Career Day, which took place on January 26, 2002. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra showed a picture of the descendants of Jose Felipe Guerra Hinojoza and Maria Josefa Gonzales Garcia. |
6. |
Old Business: None. |

New Business:
Mr. Adolph Trejo informed us of a company that would make a die of our logo for a one time fee of $600.00 and then we would be able to buy 2000 logos (2 7/8 X 2 ½) for $1,105.00 or 1000 for $1,095.00. Mr. David Garza noted it would be beneficial as well as give our organization a more professional image. A motion was made and passed unanimously. |

Our first speaker was Ms. Mercedes Meyer from the Museum of Fine Arts – Vice Regal Colonial Art (circa 1521-1821). Ms. Meyer gave a beautiful presentation with slides of different artifacts, which are on display at the museum. She also gave out pamphlets from the museum along with free passes to the exhibit. |
9. |
Our second speaker was Dr. Adolpho Santos, who spoke about a very interesting and thought provoking topic. The influence which different ethnic groups have had on our elections and how the different hispanic groups individually and collectively have effected the results of the elections in this country. |
10. |
An announcement was made that the March meeting would be held at the Museum of Fine Arts located at 1001 Bissonnet. |
11. |
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 until March 20, 2002. |

January 16, 2002 |
1. |
President Guerra opened the meeting promptly at 7 PM by welcoming everyone. |
2. |
Treasurer’s report: President Guerra reported a balance of - $14,818.37. |
3. |
No minutes were submitted from the previous meeting. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra reported membership dues continue to come in. Several members submitted their dues for the year at the meeting. |
5. |
Mrs. Cris Garza reported information regarding Career Day. It will be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center from 8:30AM – 3 PM, Saturday, January 26, 2002. Rey Herrera suggested we all should attend as role models. |
6. |
President Guerra mentioned he had not heard from Westin Galleria Hotel concerning the $1300 that they wanted to charge us. He also mentioned he had returned a check to a lady who, had attended and expressed disappointment that one of the speakers had not been able to attend the conference. After discussing with her the unique circumstances of that horrible day of September 11th, she returned the check. |
7. |
The Essay Contest was reported as a closed contest from insufficient response from students. Some of the reasons discussed were not enough money offered and not enough interested personnel at the schools to promote and follow through. |
8. |
President Guerra asked if anyone had done any research on different meeting places. Mr. Silva suggested the Bering Dr. Church, Pappasitos, and the Sharpstown Communty Center. |
9. |
Mr. Silva introduced a potential future member: Mr. Laredo. |
10. |
Old Business:
a. Mr. Rey Herrera announced the sale of 9 cookbooks totaling $154.00. |

New Business:
a. Mrs. Garza informed us of an exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts on Texas Flags upcoming in February or March, and also mentioned was the exhibit on the artifacts of the Viceroy.
b. The Multicultural event being held on Saturday, May 11, 2002, from 12pm – 5pm at Eisenhower High School 7932 Antoine St., was also mentioned. Mr. Guerra mentioned having a table with some novelties to promote our club.
c. Mr. Genaro Flores mentioned the upcoming Cesar Chavez Parade.
d. Mr. Silva suggested we have Show & Tell citywide during Hispanic Month. |

Our guest speaker, Mr. Will Howard – Texas Room, Houston Public Library, was introduced by Mr. Alfred Flores. Mr. Howard, a very interesting speaker, spoke very eloquently concerning the Bexar Archives and the Benavides Book. He also passed out several informative handouts and spoke about the different variations of the Texas Flags during the 1800s. |
