November19, 2003 |
1. |
President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7:25 PM. Introduced himself and welcomed everyone. The meeting was called to order a little late because we were all stuffing envelopes with membership applications, and also putting labels and stamps on the envelopes. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the October meeting. A motion to pass the minutes was unanimously accepted. |
3. |
Mr. Guerra gave an oral treasurer’s report. He gave us a total of $10,157.28 which did not include the expense of $75.00 for envelopes and stamps. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra passed out maps to Juan and Betty Hernandez’s house for the Christmas Party. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra announced Mr. Baldemar Silva had been elected as Vice President to Clayton Library Friends Board. |
6. |
Mr. Baldemar Silva gave a report on his day at Eisenhower High School. He stated he had gotten a good response from the students. |
7. |
Mr. Guerra mentioned his contact with Rev. Lauro Garza over the internet. Mr. Garza started with Exxon, had later turned to religion and was a powerful speaker. |

Mr. Guerra said there would be a Genealogy Fair on Sunday, March 14, 2004 in Sugar Land TX. |
9. |
One of our members, Ricardo Rivera’s daughter was hurt in an automobile accident and a benefit BBQ was held on November 1, 2003, Mr. Trejo made a motion the organization donate $250.00 to that benefit . |

It was announced that Homero Vera is the new director of Mifflin Kenedy Ranch Museum. |

The 2004 Conference Report – Victoria TX- needs information for the Saturday luncheon award. |

New Business:
Passed out flyer on notice of new book for sale by Los Bexaranos Genealogical Society. Index to San Fernando Marriage Records 1742-1850 by Yolanda Patino. |

SPEAKER:
Our speaker was Ms. M. Garcia, author of
Marriages of Monclova – During the Spanish Colonial Era 1689-1822. Mr.
David Garza made a motion and Ms. Zermeno second the motion, to buy and donate
the book to the Clayton Library. |

| HGS Meeting Minutes October15, 2003 |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 6:55 PM. Introduced himself, and welcomed everyone. |

The minutes from the September meeting were distributed to everyone. Mr. Silva moved to pass the minutes and everyone approved the motion. |
3. |
Mr. Guerra gave us a report on our balance which is $10,645.96. |
4. |
Mr. Baldemar Silva gave his report on his trip to Tulsa. He reported that although there had been a lot of advertising, only six people showed up. He did say however, that they very cordial and hospitable. They took him on a tour while there and the hotel he stayed in was very nice. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra mentioned AAMA requested for funds of $100.00. It was agreed by all that $100.00 would be sent to them. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra offered two very interesting web sites: Cabeza de Vaca Website (http://www.library.txstate.edu/swwc/cdv), he mentioned this website was very informational on Cabeza de Vaca, and Spanish Archives Website (http://www.Idelpino.com/archivos.html) an index passenger list from 1599 with English instructions. Actual site (http://aer.mcu.es/sgae/index_aer.jsp). |

Mr. Guerra talked about the next conference which will take place in Victoria, TX in September 17, 18, and 19, 2004. Ms. Sophia Postel de Wilson, President requested and will welcome any suggestions which will make the conference a huge success. |

Mr Guerra also announced the second Annual Juan Seguin Memorial Picnic will take place on October 25, 2003, 10:00AM – 6PM at 3523 Highway 134 La Porte TX (Battle of San Jacinto), battleship side under the Pavilion on the left side of the park. |

Mr. Guerra gave the names from the nominating Committee:
President – Joe Guerra (announced this would be his last term)
Secretary – Josephine Mendoza
Publicity – Gerardo Nevarez
Mr. Serrano made motion to accept the nominations, and everyone voted to accept. Mr. Silva commented he wanted everyone to know that should someone else want to try for the presidency, he or she would not be left alone to learn for himself. He said he was a president once himself and would be willing to help whomever attempted to give it a try. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned the Christmas Party this year would be at Juan Hernandez’s beautiful home on December 6, 2003. |

New Business:
The Temple Beth Israel Jewish Community Center will have a free seminar from 1PM till 5PM, Sunday, October 26, 2003. Mr. Silva said these events have previously turned out to be very successful. |

Our speaker for this month was Mr. Robert de Berardinis, of the Clayton Library Friends, spoke extensively of the records which are available at the Clayton Library. |

September 17, 2003 |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. Introduced himself, welcomed everyone, and talked about the importance of networking. |

The minutes from the August meeting were distributed to everyone. Mr. Trejo moved to pass the minutes and Mrs. Chavarria second the motion. |

Mr. Guerra gave us a report on our balance which is $10,645.96 with one check still out for about $75.00. We made $795.00 at the convention. |

Mr. Guerra discussed the convention and Mr. Muguerza gave a report on the bus trip. We were told that the next convention is scheduled to be hosted by Victoria, TX in 2004 and by Laredo, TX in 2005. |

Mr. Guerra asked if anyone had any ideas for new projects for 2004. |

Mr. Guerra introduced Ms. Sarah Jackson, Archivist for Harris County, who spoke about the Cuban Papers Seminar and also becoming a HCA volunteer and the Family Preservation Day being held at the Julia Ideson Building, Reynolds Room, 1st floor on Saturday October 11, 2003, at 10AM to 2PM. Ms. Liz Hicks, New President Clayton Library Friends, also spoke to us about becoming a member of Clayton Library Friends, and volunteering. Mr. Robert de Berardinis spoke about extracting Houston Records and presenting them to the Clayton Library. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned the Clayton Library Friends nominated Mr. Baldemar Silva as a board member. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned the Christmas Party this year would be at Juan Hernandez’s beautiful home on December 6, 2003. |

Mr. Guerra announced the gifts to Clayton Library as follows:

Mr. Silva will be in Tulsa, OK to speak on October 7th and 8th, 2003. |

Mr. Silva talked about organizing a trip to Salt Lake City, UT in May 12th – 19th, 2004, for those who are interested. The airline tickets would be $266.00. |

Our speaker for this month was the impressionable Ms. Carolyn Hellen, who very demonstratively spoke about the items you may find helpful on a genealogy fact finding trip, including family reunions, courthouses, archives, cemetery and home visits. She mentioned items which I’m sure a lot of us had not even thought of taking along such as old sox with sulfur powder. |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 6:50 PM. Introduced himself and welcomed everyone. |

The minutes from the July meeting were distributed to everyone. Mr. Garza moved to pass the minutes and everyone else second the motion. |

Mr. Guerra gave us a report on our balance which is $10,752.66. |

Mr. Guerra passed out labels and envelopes to everyone and we all helped get the envelopes prepared for mailing the journals. |

Mr. Guerra asked if everyone present would go over the membership list and check for any necessary changes and for update on dues paid. |

Robert de Berardinis would like to speak at the next meeting on extracting Houston Records and present to the Clayton Library. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned the Christmas Party, at the Hernandez home, is tentatively set for December 6, 2003, and also there will not be a meeting in the month of December. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned the need for people to work the conference table and help with the book sales. Mr. Trejo will take the flag to the San Antonio Conference. |

Mr. Guerra announced the Cuban Papers Conference at the Julia Ideson Building on September 27, 2003. |

Elections will be held in October for next year for: President, Secretary, and Correspondence Secretary. |

Our speaker for this month was Mr. Dick Reese, 2nd Vice President, The Sons of the Republic of Texas. He gave a very interesting slide presentation, as well as, an equally interesting speech concerning the future plans for the San Jacinto Monument and battle grounds. |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7:06 PM.
Introduced himself and welcomed everyone. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the June meeting. Mr.
Serrano moved to pass the minutes and Mr. Oscar Guerra second the motion. |

Mr. Guerra gave us a report on our balance which is $10,556.56.
There was $100.00 expenditure for the patches, which will be needed for the
convention. |

Mr. Guerra gave out applications for the convention and gave directions on
how to get there. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra mentioned that he is still in need of more articles by August
10th. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra reported the Border Crossing films will be announced in the
Clayton Library Quarterly Publication. |

Mr. Guerra asked for volunteers to take books to the convention in San
Antonio if Mr. Herrera is not able to attend. |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7:09 PM.
Introducing himself and welcomed everyone. He began by offering his
deepest condolences to Mr. Flores on the passing away of his father. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the May meeting. Mr.
Garza moved to pass the minutes and Mr. Silva second the motion. |

Mr. Guerra gave us a report on our balance which is $10,507.66.
The books were then turned over to Mrs. Cris Garza, we were all very happy to
see her back. |

Mr. Guerra gave us the list of the San Antonio Conference speakers: Dr.
Felix Almarez, Rudy Rodriguez, Kendall Cockrell - Photos, Jose Antonio Esquivel
– Mendoza, Israel Cavazos. The Sunday Family Speakers: Elizondo, Garza,
Arocha, Benavidez, Eliseo Martinez. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned that he is still in need of more articles by August
1st. |

Mr. Guerra reported tapes are available of the Border Crossing Records at
the Clayton Library. |

Mr. Silva brought four or five volumes of books about the Mexican
Revolution to the meeting for us to look and see if some of our ancestors were
listed in them. |

Old Business:
Mr. Trejo will inquire on ordering patches in time for
the conference in San Antonio, he will also display cups, caps and
patches. Additionally, two tables have been reserved for our organization
at the conference. It was mentioned that the Jacinto Symposium was not
complimentary to the Mexican people. |

New Business:
Mr. Genaro Flores displayed a book named Third Reality
by Ernesto Nieto, founder of the National Hispanic Institute. Mr. Nevarez
passed out copies of some very useful information called Your Family History,
From an idea to a printed and bound book. |

May 21, 2003 |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7:04 PM.
Introducing himself and welcomed everyone. A discussion was held
concerning the books which will be donated to Clayton Library. |

Mr. Guerra gave us a report on our balance which is $13,366.64 and money
is still coming in. |
3. |
The minutes were distributed to everyone from the April meeting. Mr.
Garza moved to pass the minutes and Mr. Silva second the motion. |

Mr. Serrano reported that 20 packets were ready for new members. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra talked about the upcoming State Conference which will be held
September 5,6,7th, 2003, at the Omni Hotel 9821 Colonnade Blvd. San Antonio TX
78230. Hosted by Los Bexarenos Genealogical Society of San Antonio
TX. Rooms will be $89.00 plus tax. There will be a bus trip on
Friday to the Museum of Art, San Fernando Cathedral, Spanish Governor’s Palace,
and to the Institute of Texas Cultures - $25.00 Lunch. Also on Friday they
will have Photo Heritage Day. On Saturday will be the conference $40.00
each before August 5, and $50.00 after. Festive Fandango $10.00 each will
take place on Saturday also. Our organization will have a vendors
table. There will be Mass on Sunday at 7AM. |

Mr. Guerra reported on the Crossing Records at Clayton: $1,000 was
donated. Mr. Garza motioned we pay an additional $2,500. The total
cost is $7,000 for the complete Border Crossing records. The Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce is also to donate money hopefully. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned that he needs more articles by August 1st. |
8. |
A copy of the Texas Highways magazine was passed around which featured an
article on genealogy and also showed a picture of our president , his son, his
father, and his granddaughter. |

Mr. Nevarez talked about book binding our genealogy
records and information. He also passed around some brochures on book
binding. Mr. Silva mentioned he will bring his books on the Mexican
Revolution at the next meeting for everyone to see. |

Our speaker this month was Mr. Jose De La Isla, who talked about his book
called The Rise of Hispanic Political Power and some of the future changes in
the Supreme Court. He was an extremely interesting speaker. |

April 16, 2003 |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7 PM. Introduced
himself and welcomed everyone. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the March meeting. Mr.
Trejo made a motion to pass the minutes and passed unanimously. |

Mr. Guerra gave us a total of $13,327.64 on hand and mentioned that
$1000.00 check had been given to the Clayton Library for the tapes as mentioned
in previous meetings. |

Mr. Serrano gave us a progress report on the membership packets. He
said he would make 20 or 25 more. |

Mr. Silva, Mr. Trejo, and Mr. Herrera attended the Genealogy Fair in
Sugar Land. Mr. Silva mentioned that he discovered he was eligible to join
the Sons of the Republic of Texas. He also reported on the enthusiasm of
the participants and the costumes which were worn from the times of their
ancestors. He also noted all the different pins which were worn with great
pride. Mr. Trejo concurred with Mr. Silva, and added it very entertaining
looking at the different people showing off their collection of pins. |

The Texas State Historical Association will co-sponsoring the annual
Battle of San Jacinto symposium on April 25th from 9:15AM - 4PM at the Houston
Club, 811 Rusk, Houston, TX |

It was suggested that all articles for the journal be submitted by
August. Mr. Guerra complimented all the articles submitted for the
previous journal edition. |

New Business: Mr. Silva talked about joining the Sons of the Republic of
Texas. He also talked about going to Sam Houston High School to introduce
genealogy to the younger kids and make them aware of how important it is to know
your ancestors and know where you came from. |

Our speaker this month was Mr. Neo Franco Cantu, he had previously spoken
to our group about his book called 1810, A Destiny Foretold. He reported
he had signed a 7year contract to publish his book. It may be in book
stores in March, 2004. He read and interesting excerpt from the book about
the protagonist. |

March 19, 2003 |
1. |
President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7 PM. Introduced
himself and welcomed everyone. We all proceeded to individually introduce
ourselves and gave the names we were researching. |
2. |
Mr. Guerra gave us a total of $14,108.64 on hand and mentioned that there
was two or three more people to add. He also added he had received a
letter from the IRS letting him know the organization had to keep the balance
under a certain amount. |
3. |
The minutes were distributed to everyone from the February meeting.
Ms. Zermeno made a motion to pass the minutes and Ms. Holmes second the motion. |
4. |
Mr. Serrano gave us a progress report on the membership packets. He said
he had just received additional booklets and would need about 20 more for new
members. He brought 6 complete packets for the members to critic. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra mentioned the Genealogy Fair which will take place on Saturday,
April 12, 2003, Sons of American Revolution, 226 Matlage Way Sugar Land TX, near
Imperial Pure Cane Mill, across from the Post Office. He mentioned that he
along with Mr. Silva, Mr. Trejo, and Mr. Herrera will bring the HGS flag and a
table top covering. |

The Texas City Ancestry Searchers, was mentioned, will have a seminar on
Saturday, September 13, 2003, at the Charles T. Doyle Convention Center, 2010
5th Ave., Texas City, TX. |

The City of Houston acknowledged as a gift of Historia Social de una
Comunidad Tlaxcalteca San Miguel de Aguayo (Bustaments, N.L.) 1686-1820, in
honor of Clayton Library Friends. |
8. |
Show & Tell: Mr. Serrano passed a book he purchased from Borderland
for beginners on genealogy Mex-Amer. Genealogy Research: Following the Paper
Trail to Mexico, John Schmal & Donna Morales. |

The Texas State Historical Association will co-sponsoring the annual
Battle of San Jacinto symposium on April 25th from 9:15AM - 4PM at the Houston
Club, 811 Rusk, Houston, TX. |

It was proposed that we pay the $ 1000 for the Border Crossing tapes to
go to the Clayton Library from our organization. The motion was passed
unanimously. |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7 PM. Introduced
himself and welcomed everyone. We all proceeded to individually introduce

Mr. Serrano gave us a progress report on the membership packets He
said he had just received additional booklets and would have more packets next
month. |

Mr. Silva reported that the Uniting the African-American Family function
which took place on February 15, 2003, had a large turn out and was very
successful. |

Mr. Guerra announced there will be a Genealogy Fair on Saturday, April 12,
2003, Sons of American Revolution, 226 Matlage Way Sugar Land TX, near Imperial
Pure Cane Mill, across from the Post Office. |

Mr. Guerra also announced that our organization will have a booth at the
fair. Mr. Silva and Mr. Trejo volunteered to participate. They will
have blank applications to distribute, and will have books for sale. |

We had three speakers for this month. The first one was Mr. Lionel
Piyon, VP of the “Old Timers Club” which was established in 1980 and chartered
in 1989. Was previously named “Los Vatos”. They meet every 3rd
Saturday at the Lennox BBQ on Harrisburg Street. Membership is $20 a
year. They have several fundraising functions throughout the year, the
proceeds go for scholarships , and Toys for Christmas. There will be a
dance from 1PM - 6PM with live music on April 27th at the Knights of Columbus on
Louisiana Street; on June 28th from 7PM – 12AM at the Arabian Temple; and
on December 14th from 1PM – 6PM at Brady’s Landing. The second
speaker was Mr. David Singleton of the “Clayton Library Friends”, which was
chartered in 1987 and has from 1,700 to 2,000 members. He passed out
brochures and applications for membership of $10. The money collected from
the memberships is used to purchase books for the library. The third
speaker was Mr. Robert de Berardinis, Clayton Library Friends Board
Member. Mr. de Berardinis spoke about purchasing “Los Papeles de
Cuba” He asked for volunteers who could read in Spanish and identified the
Nacogdoches archives dated from 1828. In 1850 the county clerk was to have
sent all records to Austin TX All but three boxes were sent, which is what
needs to be identified. There will be a seminar on Saturday, September 27th on
how to read the Cuban papers. Dr. Hoffman will do the Spanish version and
Mr. de Berardinis will do the French version. He also said the Clayton
Library has all Spanish language newspapers. |

January 15, 2003 |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7 PM. Introduced
himself and welcomed everyone. Mr. Alfred Cantu, a new member, introduced
himself and expressed his desire to learn more about his ancestors. We all
proceeded to individually introduce ourselves and gave the names we were
researching. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the November meeting.
Ms. Soraiz made a motion to pass the minutes and Mr. Flores second the motion to
accept the minutes. |
3. |
Mr. Guerra gave us a total of $13,874.14 on hand. He also mentioned
having several applications with dues, which will need to be added to the total. |
4. |
The Hispanic Forum will be sponsoring Career Day at the George R. Brown
Convention Center on January 25, 2003, at 11AM. The Hispanic Genealogical
Society will participate with a booth. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra mentioned we had donated $750.00 to the scholarship fund of The
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He asked for a vote on whether we wanted
to donate again this year, the motion was passed unanimously. There will
be a dance, with Jay Perez playing, on February 1, 2003, at The Arabic Shriner’s
Temple, 2900 N. Braeswood Houston TX. |

There will be a seminar called the Uniting the African-American Family,
Saturday February 15, 2003, at 10AM -1PM at the Church of Latter Day Saints,
16535 Kleinwood Houston TX. |

Mr. Guerra talked about the benefits of having a web page as another
avenue of receiving or exchanging information on the name you are researching. |

A reminder that the conference this year will be held in San Antonio TX. |

Old Business:
Mr. A. Trejo gave information on the inventory of caps,
cups, emblems, and stickers. The list was passed around of the prices for
each item. |

New Business:
Mr. Tony Serrano talked about his idea to put together
some new folders for the new members. Mr. Silva volunteered some
additional ideas and to do some of the work of putting the folders together at a
cheaper price. Mr. Guerra asked for a vote to pay for the materials needed
and asked if Mr. Silva and Mr. Serrano
would work together in mass producing the
folders. Everyone voted
unanimously. Mr. Silva talked about the Ancestry file and also mentioned
he will be volunteering on Thursday evenings from 6PM – 9PM at The Church of
Latter Day Saints on 1101 Bering Houston TX |

Our speaker for this month was supposed to be the President of “Old
Timers Organization” but was not able to attend. |

Mr. Guerra asked everyone to try to come up with more projects for the
new year and some ideas for a new fund raiser for the Tejano Statue, before he
adjourned the meeting at approximately 8:27PM until February 19, 2003. |
