| HGS Meeting Minutes
October 20, 2004 |
1. |
Our Vice President, Lydia Chavarria started the meeting at 7:03PM. |
2. |
No treasury report was submitted. |
3. |
No minutes were submitted for September. Secretary apologized for
not having the minutes; there was a misunderstanding on whether there would be a
meeting. |
4. |
OLD BUSINESS:
The next conference in 2005, will be hosted by Laredo
TX. The one in 2006, will be hosted by Dallas, TX. The one in 2007,
will be hosted by Corpus Christi, TX. |
5. |
NEW BUSINESS:
Elections for officers will be held next month for 1st,
and 2nd Vice President, and also for Treasurer. |
6. |
Mrs. Paz Guerra is in the hospital. Our prayers are with her and
wish for a speedy recovery. It was unanimously agreed to send her some
flowers/plant. |
7. |
Mr. Flores will talk to Juan Hernandez to confirm our invitation to the
Christmas Party. |
8. |
Mr. Trejo suggested we plan for a Christmas party on our own. |
9. |
The Jefferson Davis Alumni is having a charity dance on Saturday, October
23, 2004. |
10. |
SPEAKER:
We had no speaker this month. |

| HGS Meeting Minutes
July 21, 2004 |
1. |
Mr. Flores called the meeting to order at 7:15PM. Introduced himself, welcomed everyone. He explained that Mr. Guerra was on vacation and would not be attending the meeting. He started with himself and also asked everyone to give the names they were researching. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the June, 2004, meeting. Mr. Holms motioned to accept the minutes and they were unanimously accepted. |
3. |
Mr. Flores Trejo reported $825 $423 paid for the pins and passed a picture around. |
4. |
Mr. Flores talked about the conference for this year which will be held at the Holiday Inn Conference Central in Victoria TX, September 17, 18, 19, 2004. Two tables have been purchased. Reservations should be made as soon as possible. |
5. |
Old Business:
Salon Juarez, located on Navigation and 73rd, the site of numerous events by LULAC among others, is no longer in danger of being demolished. The property taxes were paid. Many Almendarez will be the contact person who has gotten involved in the project. |

New Business:
None |
7. |
Our speaker was Ms. Christina Morales, owner of Morales Funeral Home. She gave us a very interesting history of how the funeral home and the radio station got started by her family. She also passed around a large album, which had been kept up by her grandmother, of newspaper clippings and pictures of all the events since the beginning of the businesses. |

June 16, 2004 |
1. |
President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7PM. Introduced himself, welcome everyone. He then asked everyone to give the names they were researching. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the May, 2004, meeting. Mr. Murgueza motioned to accept the minutes and Mrs. Chavarria second the motion. |
3. |
Mr. Guerra gave the treasurer's report with a balance of $10,181.93. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra made an announcement that he had two articles, possibly three. He will need all articles for the Journal 2004 by July 15th. |
5. |
The conference this year will be held at the Holiday Inn Conference Central in Victoria TX, September 17, 18, 19, 2004. Two tables have been purchased. Reservations should be made as soon as possible. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra announced that there will be a 2nd Edition of Carl L. Duaine's "With All Arms" coming out this month and should begin mail outs early in July for $50.00 (tax and shipping included). |

Mr. Walter Kirk, from IDS spoke about the possibility of making some pins with our logo on them. He passed around some samples of other pins he had made for other companies. He told us his ideas and he suggested we talk it over and decide later. |

New Business:
It was announced that Salon Juarez is in danger of being demolished. It was the site of numerous events by LULAC among others. It was owned by Mr. Castillo, but because of back taxes, the building will have to be auctioned to pay those taxes. |

Our speaker was Mr. Gilbert Moreno, owner of La Monita and Rio Posada Restaurant. He gave us the history of how both businesses got started by his family. |

May 19, 2004 |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7PM. Introduced himself, welcomed everyone. |

The Minutes were distributed to everyone from the April, 2004 meeting. Mrs. Chavarria motioned to accept the minutes and Mr. Serrano second the motion. |
3. |
Cris Garza gave us the treasurer's report. She reported a balance of $10, 155.21. |
4. |
The conference this year will be held at the Holiday Inn Conference Central in Victoria, TX, September 17, 18, 19, 2004. The brochures will be mailed out after June 1st. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra reported that $1,000.00 had been sent to the Tejano Monument in Austin. He commented that they are still in need of additional funds for the monument. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra made an announcement that he will need the articles for the Journal 2004, by mid July. |
7. |
The Battle of San Jacinto Symposium took place, April 23, 2004. It was reported that the first part of the symposium was rained out but the rest of the afternoon turned out good. |
8. |
Mr. Guerra asked what we could do for the conference table. It was suggested we have some pins made up to sell. Mr. Guerra asked Mr. Trejo to look into the prices and what is available that would be of interest. |

New News:
It was announced that additional people are needed on the Telephone COmmittee. This committee calls members to remind them of the upcoming meetings and for other emergency announcements which may take place before the next scheduled meeting. |

Our speaker was Ms. Marje Harris, Manager of the Clayton Library. Ms. Harris talked about the Cuban Papers. The reason they are called the Cuban papers is because the French took the papers to Cuba and then later they were taken to Seville, Spain. She also gave a handout called the Genealogical Research Along the Spanish Gulf Coast, in which she pointed out several books in the list, which she thought might be of special interest to us. The list had various extremely interesting research books available at the Clayton Library. |

April 21, 2004 |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 6:55 PM. Introduced himself, welcomed everyone. He Then asked everyone to give the names they are researching. He also gave us the sad news of Genaro Flores' death. He will be missed by everyone that was fortunate enough to know him. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone form the March, 2004, meeting. Mr. Garza motioned to accept the minutes and everyone unanimously accepted. |
3. |
Cris Garza gave us the treasurer's report. She reported a balance of $11,055.21. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra made an announcement that we need articles for the Journal 2004. |
5. |
Cris Garza gave us a report on the $500.00 donated to the Gallegos Elementary School. She said the school was very appreciative of the donation. |
6. |
The Battle of San Jacinto Symposium will take place on Friday, April 23, 2004. Work is being done on the San Jacinto battle grounds. |
7. |
Mr. Guerra announced the Houston Public Library will have its 100 year celebration on Sunday, May 2, 2004. |
8. |
Mr. Guerra passed out the website with picture of the Tejano Statue in Austin Fund Raiser. |
9. |
Mr. Guerra told us of his visit to Fernando Resendez's house and had a picture of Mariano Resendez's gun. |

David Garza made a motion to discuss making a donation toward the Tejano Monument. Lydia Chavarria motioned to donate $1,000.00, Mr. Silva second the motion. |

Our speaker was Ms. Rosie Zamora. She started the First Hispanic Genealogical Society in May 1981. She spoke of the difference in how it was starting out and how much has been accomplished to date. She also brought all her records and various other documents and donated them to HGS. |

March 17, 2004 |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting
to order at 7 PM. Introduced himself, welcomed everyone. He then
asked everyone to give the names they are researching. He also gave us a
report on Genaro’s medical condition. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the February, 2004,
meeting. Mr. Silva motioned to accept the minutes and everyone unanimously
accepted. |
3. |
Cris Garza gave an oral treasurer’s report. She reported $370.00 in
new membership. There was $479.95 in request for journals. |
4. |
Mr. Flores and Mr. Trejo gave a report on the Hispanic Career Day, they
both said it turned out to be a fantastic event. |
5. |
The Cesar Chavez Parade will take place, April 3, 2004, Saturday at 9AM.
Chris Garza suggested $500.00 for the Gallegos Elementary School. Mr.
Garza motioned to sponsor and Mr. Flores second the motion. |
6. |
The Battle of San Jacinto Symposium 2004 will take place on Friday, April
23, 9:30 AM to 4PM, at the Hilton Hotel and Conference Center at the University
of Houston. |
7. |
Ms. Camille Guerra donated $250.00 toward books to the Clayton Library and
$350.00 from Borderland Books. |

New Business
The new book from Neo F. Cantu, Angel of Goliad,
The 19th Annual Goliad Massacre Living History Program to be presented at
Presidio La Bahia on March 27 & 28, 2004. |

Our speakers were Ms. Elizabeth N. Hicks, Present of
Clayton Library Friends, who spoke of some of the different sources to do your
research. We also had Mr. George Fontinos, who spoke about his company
called Family Scan. He talked about the benefits of putting your photos on
CDs and the large quantities which could be stored safely. |

President Joe Guerra called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.
Introduced himself, welcomed everyone. He then asked everyone to give the
names they are researching. |

The minutes were distributed to everyone from the January, 2004,
meeting. The minutes were unanimously accepted. |
3. |
Cris Garza gave an oral treasurer’s report. She reported $300.00 in
new membership. There was $750.00 in expenses for the Tejano Day at the
Rodeo. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra announced the Genealogy Fair which takes place on Sunday, March
14, 2004, from 10AM to 4PM at the Sugar Land Community Center. It is
located across from the post office. He also asked if we wanted to
participate. |
5. |
The Student Fair Hispanic Career Day Forum will take place Saturday,
February 28, 2004, at the George R. Brown Convention Center. $250.00 will
be donated for a table at this event. |
6. |

Our speaker was Dr. C. Crimm. She talked about the book she wrote
about the DeLeon Family and Victoria TX. She is a very exciting and
informative speaker. Needless to say she had a captivated audience.
She brought extra books to sell after her speech. |

January 21, 2004 |
1. |
President Joe Guerra called the
meeting to order at 6:55 PM. Introduced himself, welcomed everyone, and
thanked everyone for the cards and flowers sent for his father‘s funeral.
Everyone then gave the names they are researching. |
2. |
The minutes were distributed to everyone from the November, 2003,
meeting. David Garza motioned to pass the minutes and Mr. O. Guerra
seconded the motion. |
3. |
Cris Garza gave an oral treasurer’s report. She gave us a total of
$11,202.95. It was noted that some members had submitted more than their
membership contribution. Ms. Trejo motioned to accept the report, it was
unanimously accepted. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra again thanked everyone for the beautiful flowers sent for his
father’s funeral. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra announced he had received an email concerning the Genealogy
Fair which takes place on Sunday, March 14, 2004, from 10AM to 4PM at the Sugar
Land Community Center. It is located across from the post office.
David Garza made a motion that we participate, Mr. Trejo seconded the motion. |
6. |
Mr. Baldemar Silva’s brother passed away in Fort Worth on January 16,
2004, as of the meeting no information had been received on the services. |
7. |
The Student Fair Hispanic Career Day Forum will take place Saturday,
February 28, 2004, at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Volunteers
are needed for three different time slots: from 9AM-11AM; from 11AM- 1PM; or
from 1PM – 3PM. |
8. |
Old Business:
It was announced that due to his health, Mr. Genaro
Flores would not be able to attend the meetings. It was also announced
that money is still needed for the Tejano Preservation Monument. |
9. |
New Business:
The face for the statue of the Tejano
Preservation Monument will be the face of Fernando De La Garza, Cris Garza’s(our
treasurer) grandfather. |
10. |
Our speaker was Mr. Ronald Rodriguez, son of the owners
of the Mungia Furniture Store. He gave us some very interesting history of
his parent’s furniture store and the Azteca Theater here in Houston, TX during
the 1920s. He also gave us some very good photos of how things looked back
then. |
11. |
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8PM until
February 18, 2004. |
