Novermber 16, 2005 |
1. |
President, Joe Guerra started the meeting at approximately 6:43PM. |
2. |
Ms. Estella Trejo made a motion to accept the minutes of the previous
meeting, Mr. Adolph Trejo second the motion. |
3. |
The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $8,896.07. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra talked about the membership dues statements, which needed to be
prepared for mailing and will be going out by Thanksgiving. Everyone at
the meeting helped assemble and prepare the dues statement mail outs. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra mentioned that he would be sending a check for $500.00 to
Corpus Christi along with the members list after the February 4th meeting.
The money would be to help them in getting the 2006 conference together. The
2007 Conference will held in Austin TX. |

Mr. Guerra talked the website and the changes he would be making to get it
updated. |
7. |
Mr. Guerra mentioned the Christmas party which would be held tentatively
at Mr. Hernandez’s home. He still had to call and confirm. |

Mr. Guerra announced the nominations for President, Secretary,
Corresponding Secretary and Publicity Chairperson. Mr. Guerra was
unanimously chosen for President; Ms Mendoza chose to continue as secretary and
was unanimously accepted. Mr. Garza was nominated by Chris Garza for
Publicity Chairperson. |

OLD BUSINESS:
The statue on capital grounds has raised $500,000.00 and
still needs more. |

NEW BUSINESS:
The Houston Hispanic Forum Career Day will be held at
the G. R. Brown Convention Center, on February 4, 2006. Mr. Ricardo
Rivera, a member who had moved to Albuquerque, and has moved back, talked about
the facilities available for genealogical research. |

SPEAKER:
Our speaker was Ms. Rose Tijerina of the Azalea Club.
She spoke about the different functions they have. She mentioned they have
25 members currently. |
12. |
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:30PM and then continued to
work on the membership distribution until 8:17PM. The next meeting will be
held January 18, 2006. |

October 19, 2005 |
1. |
President, Joe Guerra started the meeting at approximately 6:55PM. |
2. |
There were no minutes for the month of September, due to Hurricane Rita. |
3. |
The treasurer's report showed a balance of $8,805.12. The sales of journals, caps, etc. at the conference, which will be added to the present balance, totaled $368.00 |
4. |
Mr. Guerra talked about the conference, whichincluded good food and great speakers and also the bus trip to the Los Ojuelos Ranch. It was a great conference. The next conference is 2006 will be held in Corpus Christi, TX. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra mentioned that Corpus Christi would need some help in getting the conference together. he suggested we give them $500.00 startup money. Mr. Flores made a motion we give them the money and Lydia Chavarria second the motion. The motion was passed. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra talked about holding off on gettingthe credit card system for the sales or our journals and other items for now. |
7. |
Mr. Guerra purchased some books which will be donated to the Clayton Library. One was Rodrigo Diaz de Vibar (El Cid), and the other was Marriages from Mexico. |

Mr. Guerra announced that a President's Meeting will be held on March 25, 2006 in Austin, TX. |
9. |
Mr. Guerra also announced the election of officers for 2006. The following officers shall be elected in odd years: President, Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and Publicity Chairman. The following officers shall be elected in even years: First Vice President, Second Vice President, Librarian, Historian, and Memebership Coordinator. |

The new memberships will be going out November 30, 2005. |
11. |
OLD BUSINESS: No old business. |

NEW BUSINESS: The Jeff Davis Alumni Dance will be held on November 29, 2005. |

SPEAKER: Our speakers were Alice De Leon and Minda Dominguez of the Milby Hispanic Alumni Association. They poke about the different functions they have to raise money for their scholarship fund. They also invited the members to join their organization $10 a year or $35 lifetime, an annual Christmas Holiday Celebration on December 11, 2005, at Meza's Courtyard & Reception Hall at 3517 Navigation Blvd. |

August 17, 2005 |

President, Joe Guerra started the meeting at approximately 7PM. |
2. |
Lydia Chavaria made a motion to accept the minutes and they were accepted unanimously. |
3. |
The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $9,551.61, which included the expense for producing, mailing, and assembling the journals. There was an addition to the total for some new members’ dues. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra thanked all for the articles for the Journal. |
5. |
Cris Garza suggested that we try using the credit card machines for memberships and also at the conference. The manually operated machine would be $39.95 a month plus a transaction fee. The electric machine would be $49.00 a month rental fee. It would cost $525.00 to buy one. David Garza made a motion to try it for 3 months and Rosa N. Krinsky second the motion. |

Mr. Guerra thanked everyone for all the articles contributed for the Journal. |

The Hispanic Genealogical Conference was discussed which is coming up Labor Day weekend, September 2-4, 2005. Dallas is tentatively scheduled for the conference in 2007. Corpus Christi is possibly next. |

Mr. Guerra asked if anyone could help carry books and journals to Laredo, since Mr. Herrera will not be able to take them. |
9. |
Mr. Guerra also asked for additional help with binding of the journals. |
10. |
Some of the members were getting together and creating car pools to Laredo, in case someone did not want to drive by themselves. |

OLD BUSINESS:
There was a genealogy conference in Pearland. There were very few Hispanics and a large amount of Anglos. There were approximately 146 people and they had five different classes. |

NEW BUSINESS:
The Clayton Library will have a mini day long conference the middle of September. Mr. Bruno Wolf, Jr., a descendant of Captain. Blas Maria de la Garza Falcon, donated 1,000 documents to the South Texas A & M Archives in Kingsville. This took place during a span of 76 years of Spanish rule in S. Texas. |

President, Joe Guerra started the meeting at approximately 6:45PM. |

Mr. Baldemar Silva made a motion to accept the minutes and Mr. Gerardo
Navarez second the motion, the minutes were accepted unanimously. |

The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $9,580.61, which included
having paid for the tables for the conference. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra stated he was getting some articles for the journal. He
reiterated that the deadline of August 10th was getting close for the submission
of articles for the journal. |

Laredo is having their 250 years History Conference at Texas A & M
University on October 13 – 15, 2005. |
6. |
The Hispanic Genealogical Conference was discussed which is coming up
Labor Day weekend, September 2-4, 2005. |

Mr. Guerra had a Show and Tell: He had an article from the
Falfurrias Facts Newspaper which showed a picture of his family own drug
store. It also showed a picture of his maternal grandfather. Mr.
Baldemar Silva had several articles to show, one of which was the list of all
previous presidents of the Hispanic Genealogy Society since 1980. |

Mr. Guerra talked about the draft cards from Brooks County, TX and other
counties, which are available also on Ancestry .com and they are also available
at the Clayton Library. |

machine to be able to take credit cards at the conference when they sell books
or caps. |

Mr. Guerra talked about the draft cards from Brooks County, TX which are
available at http://stores.ebay.com/Books-and-Family-History-Genealogy .
The information available would enable you to build family group sheets from the
data off these cards. |

Mr. Guerra also talked about using search engines for your search. He
emphasized not to give up your search. Example: Google.com Guerra.

appeals court upheld a decision to award mineral royalties from land on Padre
Island to more than 300 heirs of a prominent South Texas family, possibly
resulting in a windfall exceeding $50 million. |

Our speaker was Ms. Loretta William, member of the Daughters
of the Republic of Texas. She spoke about the Harris County Historical
Committee of Cemetery Markers. She also spoke concerning how to be able to
qualify to belong to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. |

Tony Serrano made a motion to accept the minutes and the minutes were
accepted unanimously. |

The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $9,406.61. |

Mr. Guerra talked about the conference coming up Labor Day weekend,
September 2-4, 2005. He also asked to reserve two tables. |

Mr. Guerra also talked about Hector Guerra which was in the obituary
column. They also happen to be from the same hometown. They did not
know each other, but turned out to be related. |

Mr. Guerra talked on an article in the obituary column of the
MySanAntonio.com concerning Medal of Honor Winner Jose Mendoza Lopez who died at
the age of 94, and was the oldest living Hispanic recipient of the Medal of
Honor. |
7. |
The Houston Genealogical Forum publication will be publishing an article
of the first settlers of Texas with emphasis on immigrant groups. Kay
Kopycinski is looking for someone with Hispanic ancestors interested in writing
an article. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned that the Border Bandits Film had aired prior to the
meeting on Channel 8. |
9. |
Mr. Guerra asked for articles for the next journal to be turned in by the
beginning of August. |

The update on the web page was given by Gerardo Nevarez and he said it
will be ready pretty soon. |

The Brother’s Keeper Genealogical Program can be accessed on either

April 20, 2005 |

President, Joe Guerra started the meeting at approximately 7PM. |

Mrs. Lydia Chavarria made a motion to accept the minutes and Mrs. Sophia
Allison second the motion. |

The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $9,966.78. We had
additional members. |

Mr. Guerra talked about the Portrait of a Genealogist Report |
5. |
Mr. Guerra also talked about Recovering Hispanic Religious Thought in the
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is a project to foster the
study of the written legacy of Hispanic religious thought prior to 1960.
The conference will take place at U of H, Friday, May 13, 2005. |

Mr. Guerra asked for articles for the journal. |

Mr. Flores gave us all a report on the success and the events of Career
Day. |
8. |
The report on Cesar Chavez Parade and float was given by Ms. Eva Loredo,
principal of Gallegos Elementary School, who attended our meeting. She
also thanked us for our donation to the school. |

The update on the web page was given by Gerardo Nevarez and he said it
should be ready pretty soon. |

Mr. Guerra gave us information about being able to get copies of draft
cards, for young men 17 years through 35 years, which are available,

Cameron County 1917-1918. Mr. Don Carter, who is a member of the Church of
Latter Day Saints, has been working on this web page. |

The Talento Bilingue de Houston Cultural Arts Center is
presenting The Mulatto’s Orgy on April 15- 24th, 2005. The 5th Annual
Battle of San Jacinto Symposium will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2005. |

SPEAKER:
Our speaker was Ms. Gail Rosenthal of The Heritage
Society. Ms. Rosenthal gave us a very interesting slide show of all the
different houses which are located within the Sam Houston Park and talked
about some of the history of each house. |

The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $9,837.25. We had 2 new
additional members. |

Mr. Guerra reiterated the information concerning the 2005 Battle of San
Jacinto Symposium which will be held on April 16, 2005, at the UH Hilton
Hotel. One of the speakers will be Dr. Carolina Crimm among others. |

Mr. Guerra talked about the Cemeteries of Texas. George Gause
emailed him information on the different Gen Web sites of all the counties in
Texas. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra reported on the Kneupper Family which turned out to be
connected to the Kneuper Family even though the spelling was different. |
7. |
Mr. J. D. Garza is still looking for speakers for the Cummings-Benavides
Family Reunion, which will take place April 2, 2005, in Victoria, TX. |

The Texas Revolution on the Rio Grande will held on Thursday and Friday,
March 24 - 25, 2005 in San Antonio, 6PM – 8PM. They will have a speaker at
the Samuel Maverick exhibit which is owned by the DRT Library. |

Dr. Jerry Thompson is looking for information on Hispanics who owned
slaves. |

Ms. Marje Harris and Mr. Robert de Berardinis will be conducting Computer
Oriented Genealogy classes on March 3rd through April 7th at 6:30 – 8:30PM on
Thursday, at Bayland Community Center on 6400 Bissonnet Houston TX. The
Clayton Library and the Houston Genealogical Forum will be sponsoring these
classes. |

questions. |

OLD BUSINESS:
Tony & Lucy Serrano mentioned the trip to Salt Lake
City, Utah, which will take place June 11-19, 2005, again for anyone
interested. Cris Garza mentioned the need for volunteers for Career Day
which will be on Saturday April 9th from 11AM – 2PM. They also need
volunteers for the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo on April 11th – 13th;
volunteers need to respond by April 7th. |

NEW BUSINESS:
The 5th Annual Fine Arts Festival will held on April
9th, Saturday at 11AM – 3PM at Marshall Middle School 1115 Noble Houston TX and
Davis High School 1101 Quitman, Houston TX . Ms. Jennifer Ayres is
currently working on her Ph. D. in Spanish at the University of Houston and
needs Spanish speaking volunteers for her dissertation project. These
volunteers must be of Mexican descent; must have been born in the U. S.; must
have at least one grandparent who immigrated to the U. S. as an adult from

Our speaker was Mr. Abel Rubio, the author of Stolen
Heritage. Mr. Rubio spoke about the interesting way of life while the
French and Spaniards occupied the Canary Islands. He also talked about the
Cabrerra descendents who have family in San Antonio. |

February 16, 2005 |

Our President, Joe Guerra started the meeting at approximately 6:55PM. |

Mr. Garza made a motion to accept the minutes and Mrs. Allison second the
motion. |

The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $9,467.25. We had 11 new
members. |

Mr. Guerra reiterated that dues were being submitted at a rapid pace from
new members as well as older members. |

Mr. Gerardo Nevarez submitted a copy of his new ideas for the HGS web
page. It was unanimously agreed to adopt the new version. The only
change which was suggested was that a link be added on the new web page. |

Mr. Guerra reported that the Tejano Dance was a success and mentioned that
we needed to give others a chance to go next year. |

The 2005 Battle of San Jacinto Symposium will be held on April 16, 2005,
at the UH Hilton Hotel. One of the speakers will be Dr. Carolina Crimm
among others. If interested, you would need to call to get the time. |

The next conference will be hosted by Laredo, TX. It will take place
in September. |

The Cesar Chaves Parade will take place April 9, 2005, at 9AM.
Speeches will follow at Hidalgo Park on Avenue Q. The Hispanic Forum
Career and Education Day will also take place on the same day. |

January 19, 2005 |

Our President, Joe Guerra started the meeting at approximately 6:50PM. |

The minutes from the previous meeting were not available for the meeting
however, they were posted on the web by David Garza. |

The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $10,442.25. We had 59
renewals and three new members. There were five contributors, and six
donors. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned that dues were being submitted at a rapid pace from
new members as well as older members. |
5. |
Mr. Guerra thanked Mr. Juan Hernandez for his invitation to the members to
the Christmas Party. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra also thanked everyone for the flowers which were sent to his
wife while she was hospitalized. |
7. |
The 2005 Battle of San Jacinto Symposium will be held on April 16, 2005,
at the UH Hilton Hotel. One of the speakers will be Dr. Carolina Crimm
among others. |

Texas legislators have filed a bill which would bring the seedy side of
the Texas Rangers to the public’s attention in a film called Border Bandits who,
historians say, killed and terrorized thousands of tejanos. |

Tony and Lucy Serrano are organizing a trip to Salt
Lake City, UT which will take be on June 11- 19, 2005. Mr. Silva is
starting an International Genealogy group. The Go Texan Scholarship dance
will be February 5, 2005. Ms. Serrano made a motion to contribute for 10
people from our membership to represent us at the dance, Mr. Silva second the
motion. A motion was made to participate by contributing $300.00 for The
Hispanic Forum Career and Education Day which will be on April 9, 2005. |

SPEAKER:
Our speaker this month was Mr. Juan Hernandez. He
spoke about his very interesting and unique way of contributing to his family’s
ancestry, and what he has done to facilitate his family’s genealogical
research. He spoke of his various exciting travel adventures and also his
equally interesting entrepreneurial endeavors. |
