| HGS Meeting Minutes
August 16, 2006 |
1. |
President, Joe Guerra started the meeting at approximately 6:55PM. He welcomed everyone. |

Mrs. Lydia Chavarria made a motion to accept the minutes and Mr. Silva second the motion. |
3. |
The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $6,270.95. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra talked about how fantastic the new journal had turned out. The cover is in color with and the pictures look great. Mr. Gerardo Nevarez designed the cover in color with the dates of the 25th Anniversary of our organization. |

Mr. Guerra asked who would be representing our club at the Conference in Corpus Christi TX. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra suggested we take applications to the conference, he also asked if someone could take all the books, which include cookbooks, and all past and present journals, Gerardo Nevarez said he would. |

Mr. Guerra asked who would be manning the table at the conference. He also asked who would be attending the President’s meeting. Lydia Chavarria and Al Flores said they would attend. |

Mr. Guerra said everyone should be thinking of who to nominate for the election of officers, as well as for President, for next year in time for the next meeting. According to the schedule for the election of officers, officers being elected in Odd years: President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and Publicity Chairperson. Even years: First VP, Second VP, Treasurer, Librarian, Historian, and Membership Coordinator. |

Mr. Guerra asked that we stay committed to the Clayton Library. The new library director will begin at Clayton on August 1st . |

The new website, which will be taken care of by Gerardo Nevarez, is: http://hispanicgs.org . Mr. Adolph Trejo mentioned that he had a large amount of information he wanted to link to the new website. |

OLD BUSINESS
Mr. Flores talked about the dedication of an Official Texas State Historical Marker of Don Rafael Antonio Manchola, which took place July 15, 2006, at 127 North Courthouse Square (Market St) Historic District in Downtown Goliad TX. |

NEW BUSINESS:
Mr. David Garza talked about all of us thinking of different ways to raise money for our organization. Mr. Silva announced that The Church of Latter Day Saints will be digitizing all their documents and will be put on the internet. |

| HGS Meeting Minutes
July 19, 2006 |

President, Joe Guerra started the meeting at approximately 6:50PM. He welcomed everyone. |

Mr. David Garza made a motion to accept the minutes of the previous meeting, the minutes were accepted unanimously. |
3. |
The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $7,449.36. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra talked about needing articles for the journal before the deadline of July 30th. Mr. Muguerza submitted a 21 page article and Mr. Gerardo Nevarez committed to submitting several items also. |

Mrs. Garza talked about the scholarship reports. She named the two winners: First place, John Sanchez and second place, Lisette Soria. She said a letter, along with the check, would be sent to the college of each winner on enrollment. |

Mrs. Cris Garza gave a report on the film “Harvest of Redemption” that was inspired by a true story that occurred in the Rio Grande Valley in the 1920’s. The event was a great success, the film was great and the turnout was also good. She gave out copies of pictures of the event. |

Mr. Guerra asked who would be going to the 27th Annual Texas Conference on Hispanic Genealogy & History August 31 – September 3, 2006, in Corpus Christi TX. He mentioned that this was his last year as President. He said he would not be going to Corpus Christi so we needed to decide who would lead the delegation. He said he would hand over the data base of members to the next president. He also said we need a new webpage with domain hispanicgs.org. He said we needed a new webmaster – maybe Gerardo Nevarez? He mentioned that Houston would have to decide if we would have to host the 2008 conference. |

OLD BUSINESS
Mrs. Garza made a motion to pay for a table at GIS Alumni Association. Mrs. Cris Garza gave out a handout of the “Fiesta” with Valente Rodriguez Thursday, July 27, 2006. Valente Rodriguez, also known as “Ernie” of the hit TV series “The George Lopez Show” who will visit George I. Sanchez. She explained that since she had not spent all of the $500.00 for the film, she asked for $100.00, Mrs. Lucy Serrano second the motion, motion was accepted. Mr. Valente Rodriguez will also throw out the 1st pitch at the Astros vs. Diamond Backs game at Minute Maid Park on July 28th 2006 at 6PM. |

NEW BUSINESS:

Our first speaker was one of our scholarship winners, Ms. Lisette Soria. She gave an acceptance speech and pictures were taken. Our second speaker was Joseph Rodriguez, PhD. Director Language Acquisition Center. Dept of Modern & Classical Languages at the University of Houston. He read some poetry from several books he considered good. |

June 21, 2006 |

President, Joe Guerra on vacation. Mrs. Lydia Chavarria, Vice President started the meeting at approximately 7:03PM. She welcomed everyone and asked for everyone to give the names they are researching. |

Mr. David Garza made a motion to accept the minutes of the previous meeting, Mrs. Cris Garza second the motion. |

The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $8,993.41. |

Mrs. Chavarria passed out a flyer and talked about the Always Tango Argentine Tango and Music Performance which will be Thursday June 22, 2006, 6:30 – 7:30 PM at the Museum of Fine Arts, Brown Auditorium Theater Caroline s Law Building, 1001 Bissonnet St. Houston TX. |

Mrs. Chavarria mentioned as a reminder that the materials for the Journal should be ready to submit by the July meeting. |

Mr. Al Flores passed out a flyer and talked about the HACEMOS & HISPA 17th Annual National Conference which will take place on June 23- 25, 2006, at the Renaissance Hotel, Houston TX. He also asked for any volunteers to help man a booth. The notice went out to 100,000 employees of AT&T and they had about 200 registered for the conference so far. |

Mrs. Chavarria mentioned the 27th Annual Texas Conference on Hispanic Genealogy & History August 31 – September 3, 2006, in Corpus Christi TX. She suggested everyone register as soon as possible at the Omni Bayfront Hotel 900 North Shoreline Blvd. Corpus Christi TX. Mr. Flores announced that June 25th was open for a table at the HACEMOS National Convention which the new AT&T (formerly SBC) is the sponsor for the HACEMOS Scholarship Foundation. It will take place on June 23–25, at the Renaissance Hotel, 6500 W. Loop South, Houston TX. |

NEW BUSINESS:
Mrs. Cris Garza brought the three entries for the scholarship essays to be read and judged by the membership. We voted and the results were: 1st place - John Sanchez and 2nd place - Lesette Soria. The 1st place winner will be invited to attend the July meeting. Cris passed out a flyer on the HGS night at Talento Bilingue de Houston will sponsor a reception to help promote “Harvest of Redemption” as a film that was inspired by a true story that occurred in the Rio Grande Valley in the 1920’s. Eddie Howell, author and co-screen writer will be in attendance for discussion and to answer questions. This event will also offer the opportunity to display, distribute, and promote HGS. Cris asked for volunteers for event planning and requested $500.00 for expenses for the reception following the film. Al Flores motioned that we give the money and Adolph Trejo second the motion. |

May 17, 2006 |

President, Joe Guerra started the meeting at approximately 6:57 PM. Welcomed our visitor Mary Alvarez and gave a few suggestions on where to start researching. |

Mr. Tony Serrano made a motion to accept he minutes of the previous meeting, Mrs. Lucy Serrano second the motion. |

The treasurer's report showed a balance of $9,101.31 which included a check for $80 which as generously donated by Al Flores. |

Mr. Serrano mentioned that there were few Hispanics in attendance at the Battle of San Jacinto Symposium which took place Saturday, April 22, 2006, Hilton Hotel and Conference Center, UH. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned that the State Legislature had passed the bill to receive $602,000.00 for the Tejano Monument in Austin, TX. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned that the web page is still in the process of being completed. He also mentioned that if you wanted some genealogical forms Gerardo Nevarez would provide them if he had you email address. |

SPEAKER:
Our speaker was Charles Flores Vice President of LULAC#60. He gave us some interesting history of the organization. It was founded in 1934 to challenge racism, and inequities toward Texas' Hispanic residents while promoting patriotism, education and equality. They started the "Little School of the 400" a forerunner of Head Start. They started "SER" which later became Operation SER/Jobs for Progress. Another point of interest was, they did not let women join until 1995. They now have a woman president, the 1st in 72 years. |

April 19, 2006 |

Mr. Guerra talked about the Scholarship Program and Mr. Gerardo Nevarez said he had passed out 300 applications to Hispanic students at the University of Houston-Downtown. |

Mr. Guerra talked about the Battle of San Jacinto Symposium which will take place Saturday April 22, 2006, Hilton Hotel and Conference Center, UH. He also asked for volunteers to man the table at the symposium. Ms. Rudy Holm, Rosemary Soraiz, and Al Flores said they would be there. |

Mr. Dan Arellano, author of Tejano Roots, has been nominated for Book Award by the Texas Historical Foundation. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned that we can order Birth and Death Certificates online - www.texasonline.com |

Mr. Guerra gave us some very interesting information concerning plastic bags (jokes). |

Mr. Guerra said that he got an email from someone looking for information on De La Garza's. |

Mr. Guerra made a couple of announcements of functions taking place. The first was the DRT Alamo Mission which will take place on Monday April 24, at Fiesta San Antonio, the second was the Music Concert on April 22, at UT at Austin. |

Mr. Tony and Lucy Serrano announced a reminder about the trip to Salt Lake City Utah on August 17-24, 2006. He also suggested we pay for a table and requested volunteers to man the table at the symposium. Mr. Manuel Flores made a motion and Mr. Al Flores second the motion. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned the Hispanic Scholarship and inquired as to where we were on it. Mr. Gerardo Nevarez suggested $1,500. Mr. David Garza made a motion to accept the amount and Mr. Trejo second the motion. The amounts suggested were $700, $500, and $300. Mr. Guerra later modified the motion to $1,000 and $500, to motion was accepted. |

Mrs. Lydia Chavarria mentioned that we could start registering for this year's conference at Corpus Christi, TX. |

Mr. Guerra asked about the pencils and if they had been paid for, the check is in the mail. |

Mr. Guerra inquired about the articles for the journal. Mr. Trejo said he would be submitting one and also we will need to submit the name of the scholarship winners. |

SPEAKER:
The first speaker was Mr. Ernesto Valdez, with the ORal History Center for Public History at University of Houston. He passed around two magazines which he publishes, as he spoke of how he interviews different people to get his information for his articles. HE wants stories of different walks of life, his number is (832) 286-7924 cell. He also mentioned that National Geographic is doing DNA checks. Our second speaker was Mr. Lee Pecht, Archivist, and Director of SPecial COllections at Rice University. He gave several handouts on the Woodson Research Center at Rice University and talked about all that is available there. |

Mr. Flores talked about the Houston Hispanic Students Career Day which took place on February 4th 2006, at the Geo. R. Brown Convention Center. He mentioned there were approximately 15,000 students there and suggested we should have something to give out to the students like a brochure or pencils with our name/web address as a promotional item. Mr. Guerra asked Mr. Trejo to reorder more pencils for membership promotion. |

Mrs. Lydia Chaparral gave a report on the Texan Dance; she said they had good food, good music, and they have a very good time. |

Mr. Guerra talked about the Presidents' meeting which was held on February 4, 2006 in Austin, TX. He said the meeting was very interesting; Ms. Myra Smithwick had everything organized in preparation for the upcoming conference in Corpus Christi, TX. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned that the Clayton Library had a copy of the Guide to Military service records, 1786-1800, of the providence's of New Spain and of Florida and Louisiana from the Archivo General de Simancas. |

Mr. Guerra brought a copy of Captain Bartolome Gonzalez and his Descendants by Joel Rene Escobar Saenz. Mr. Manuel Flores made a motion to buy the book for the Clayton Library, Mr. Al Flores second the motion, the motion passed unanimously. |

Mr. Guerra talked about the new Soccer Team 1836'ers and the controversy over the name. He said as result of extremely low participation, the owners decided that the name would be changed. |

Mr. Guerra mentioned that the deadline for the articles for the 2006 journal needed to be turned in b July 5th. |

Mr. Adolph Trejo made a request to buy a bag for the club's banner and stand. It has become very cumbersome to carry it and the stand around wrapped in plastic. Mr. Guerra agreed to his looking for one with a reasonable price locally before ordering from the company that made the banner. |

Ms. Loretta Williams talked about the LULAC Council #60 which will have dedication service of an official Texas State Historical marker at 3004 Bagby, Houston, TX on February 18, 2006. |

NEW BUSINESS:
Mr. Manuel Flores announced that the new at&t (formerly SBC) is having their HACEMOS National Convention which will sponsor the HACEMOS Scholarship Foundation. It will take place on June 23-25, at the Renaissance Hotel, 6500 W. Loop South, Houston, TX. Mr. Flores also said the Bexarenos announced the 211th birthday celebration of Tejano patriot Jose Antonio Navarro at the Casa Navarro State Park on Wednesday, February 22, 2006, in San Antonio, TX. Mr. Baldemar Silva is working on a new project of all the names of ranchos, list of families, and pictures of vaqueros. Mr. Adolph Trejo is using information that he inherited from Genaro and putting together a project which connects to his wife's name Zepulveda. |

January 18, 2006 |

President, Joe Guerra started the meeting at approximately 6:55PM. |

Mr. David Garza made a motion to accept the minutes of the previous
meeting, the minutes were accepted as written. |

The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $9,702.17. |
4. |
Mr. Guerra talked about the Rodeo and dance coming up in February.
Mrs. Cris Garza mentioned giving $500.00. David Garza made a motion that
we donate the money, Mr. Adolph Trejo second the motion. |

Mr. Guerra passed around a brochure and mentioned that Borderlands Books
will close their store in San Antonio. |
6. |
Mr. Guerra stated that we did not have to send Corpus Christi the $500.00
to help them in getting the 2006 conference together, as previously mentioned in
the November meeting. |

Mr. Gerardo Nevarez gave everyone a handout of the new web page and how it
looks like now. |

Mr. Guerra requested that everyone think about any new projects we can
initiate, or participate in, for the coming year. |

Mr. Guerra talked about the Houston Hispanic Students Career Day on
February 4th 2006, at the Geo. R. Brown Convention Center. He also
mentioned that volunteers were needed for the event. Mr. David Garza made
a motion to reimburse the volunteers for their parking. The motion was not
put to a vote. |

Mr. Al Flores talked about the Christmas party. |

Mr. Robert Berardinis would like a donation of $250.00 from HGS for
Audiencia de Mexico which is 16 volumes. It includes the viceroyalty of
New Spain from 1786- 1821. |

OLD BUSINESS: Mr. Adolph Trejo made a motion and talked about looking
into getting a place or getting together somewhere and have our own party for
Christmas, Gerardo Nevarez and David Garza send the motion. It was
suggested to have it the first week in December or after Christmas, or maybe the
first week in January. Gerardo Nevarez will chair a committee to look into
what we may be able to have for Christmas. |

NEW BUSINESS: It was suggested we make baskets to give away at the
Corpus Christi Conference. David Garza discussed that we revive the
Scholarship Fund; Gerardo Nevarez also thought it would be a good idea, only use
a different approach in order to get more participation. LULAC Council 60
will have dedication service of an official Texas State Historical marker on
February 18, 2006. |

SPEAKER: No speaker for this month. Correction: Speaker for
November meeting, Ms. Rose Tijerina of the Azalea Club, which is no longer
active. She spoke about the different functions of the club during her
membership. |
